Revered catalog label Rhino Records — which put out the Left of the Dial box set and countless classic college-rock reissues by the likes of The Cure and Depeche Mode — today conducted across-the-board layoffs, jettisoning 30 to 40 employees across “all departments, including A&R, marketing, promotion and publicity,” according to Variety.

I love reading music news on SUE, but today was not a day for good news. This really sucks 'across-the-board', for those employees who got sacked, and for music fans in general. The Cure re-issues were mentioned, which sound like they could be in limbo, but I wonder what the latest is regarding the purported In Orange DVD Robert was planning to release? Haven't seen/heard any news about it in a while. Last I read on COF (maybe a year ago) was that it would be released around the time of the next batch of re-issues.

Crappy news about Rhino, botched NO reissues notwithstanding.

This sad news gave me a new appreciation for all the Rhino comps I have of new wave/80s stuff. They collected a lot of stuff that I might never have tracked down on cd otherwise. Kudos for the great work they did.

Sad News!! A friend of mine has always said that the IPod has been one of the worst things ever created as far as "true music lovers" go. After reading this, I wonder if he may be right???

This is hardly the death knell for Rhino. They make plenty of money "mining the vaults." You can be sure they'll continue to do so if with a more digital, rather than physical, initiative.

Did they really have anything to do with the Cure and DM remastered releases, though, other than getting them pressed and slapping their name on it?
