If you really want to go all the back to childhood, then Chitty Chitty Bang Bang takes the cake for me. What the fuck kinda twisted shit was that with that child catcher and all?! Christalmighty.

oh yeah Alien is up there, that movie still looks fantastic.

other good ones for me are Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street (the origianal one), Poltergeist, Halloween

From more recent ones I would single out The Ring, SAW, The Ruins.

I don`t think (m)any of the movies on the list are really scary but I haven`t seen Hellraiser.

A movie that really freaked me out in my younger days was the Evil Dead...I haven`t seen in since about 1982 and I wonder if it would still seem as scary today as it did back then.

My parents took my sister and me to see The Shining at the drive-in. I was like 8. Having immigrant parents who may or may not be clued into American pop culture can be hilarious sometimes.

Anyhoo, I didn't appreciate The Shining until much later. I cannot watch that movie from beginning to end by myself. No way. But it is a great film.

And Alien is probably my all-time favorite movie. It doesn't scare the crap of out me anymore, but the trailer still does:

Phantasm was one that for whatever reason creeped me out. I absolutely love horro movies but most have little to know effect on me.

Paranormal Activity, which is in theaters now, is a great scary movie. I know a couple of people who thought it was stupid, but everyone else I've talked to said it scared the crap out of them.

^^^ First words out of my mouth after seeing that were "Ummm, OK." I was tense, waiting almost 90 minutes for the pay-off, and it was nothing. I slept perfectly fine that night.

Agreed. I thought the same thing. For me, that type of movie wears thin really fast. I jumped a few times. But nothing that made me dive for cover. By the end I was wondering what all the fuss was about.

I watched Ghost Story last night. That's another creepy one.

The one based on the Straub novel was filmed near where I live (Woodstock, VT). Remember the bridge scene? I haven't seen the movie in years but I think about it every time I drive over that bridge.

I also know the guy who played the man in the coffin. He's a lot creepier in real life. [:D]

Yes. The book was much creepier than the film.

The Exorcist. I haven't watched it in so many years so maybe it's fear factor would be a much lower number now but, when I first watched this movie, it scared the hell out of me. I was too young to see it in the movie theatre so I watched it at home alone while my parents and sisters were out. The Omen would run a close second.

We didn't sell a lot of records, but somehow we left an impression.

so I watched "Paranormal Activity"
right before I watched it, I glanced through reviews on Amazon and a lot of them were not very good

but the movie was effective, suspenseful and scary, and the end was great. I liked it, a good low budget horror flick filmed with home camera [:D]

another very good recent horror flick that hasn't been mentioned here is "Quarantine", very fun and suspenseful movie
