It would be great if some label ever mastered these for CD. Lots of bands I've never even heard of. In fact, that one listed as #3, I don't even recognize one band. How many volumes were there? Were any additional Blind Dates tracks on any of them?

Just imagine how many local/regional artists like the Boston scene are totally unknown to many of us. Bet there are tons of great songs just waiting to be discovered.

I've got quite a few comps from around the US from early to mid 80s, but since I don't quite know how to make them into a CD they sit. One day I will learn how to do the CD thing.

They were up to 20-some volumes--only the first 7 or 8 I think were 80's. No--Blind Dates not on them.

Don't know which of the guys is which based on the photo included, but one of the guys is the spitting image of Ric Ocasek and another one is the spitting image of Billy Beard from Face to Face. I see Varulven also released an X-Dreams 3 song 7" EP. Yet another thing to add to the ol' want list...

The Count was Viglione's band. Well, one of them anyway. He had, like, 16 bands. They were always featured front and center of the Anthologies, because... that's what they were there for.

If you want to learn about any of the other artists, I'll be happy to type out some of the liner notes. Most of the bands on those comps were total shit, but each volume was usually good for one or two hidden gems.

Speaking of hidden gems just waiting to be discovered...

Former members of The Atlantics, The Neighborhoods, M.I.A. and LaPeste teamed up to sound super British in the Boston new romantic supergroup, Primary Colors.

Their lone, self-titled, EP (Urbanoise, 1983) had cruddy distribution and is virtually unpossible to find now. The opening track, "Fact and Fiction," got some airplay at the time. Not as much as it deserved. (Thank you, garage rock.)

Another La Peste connection. Not sure if they named themselves after the goatee or Dick and Barry, but Vandykes were a Boston duo of lead vocalist Frank Dehler (ex Unnatural Axe) and drummer Roger Tripp (ex La Peste). They had one comp track and one D.I.Y. 7" single -- Breakin My Heart b/w Heaven Will Fall -- in 1984 on their own Black Records label. Apparently, they didn't want anyone to know their names, since the single sure doesn't feature them anywhere on it. Hyped to Death has been nice enough to put the "A" side on CD (visit hyped2death.com and pick up Teenline #105), so here's the B-side.

Another British-sounding Massachusetts quartet who played in the WBCN Rumble in the early '80s, Gluons were one of the only two new wave groups out of New Bedford I can remember.

Mike Means - lead vocals
Ron Poitras - guitar
Tom Poitras - bass
Dave LaPorte - drums

Much like Primary Colors, Gluons' discography amounted to one self-titled EP (Beth, 1983), which sports a hideous blood-red cover. The radio single and standout was the opening cut, "I Enter Your Void." I'm sure there's no double entendres in this one...

Three-fourths of the band (Dave LaPorte was replaced by Brian Taylor) carried on as Blue Hollow, and the minimal Gluons became much less hollow with Mike Means adding synthesizers to the mix. One album was released, "Stealing a Whisper" (Still, 1986). After they disbanded, Mike joined his brother, Chris Means, in Chris' better-known band, Holy Cow. Who were the other new wave group out of New Bedford I can remember.

Planet Street were one-single wonders. That one single - 1980's General Hospital b/w Choose Your Weapon -- got songwriter Joanne Cipolla sued. I'll probably get sued for posting it here.

This 7" (Bosstown, 1984) was the 6th release on Bosstown Records (The Lifters' "Memories Fade" was the 5th) and decidedly the best thing to come out of that label. It was City Limits' only release, although they recorded an unreleased album I'd love to hear.

Originally known as 007, this skankin group changed their name to Dub 7 in 1984. (I swear they named themselves after a Taang Records catalogue number.) They were Boston's answer to the 2 Tone label. They even kinda looked like The Specials and Fun Boy Three. One 7" single, Gavel Groove b/w Federales (Core 4, 1984).

Sex Execs were my favorite local band in '83-'84. I practically cried when I found out they split. The Detour were okay. I mostly just liked "Johnny's Coaltrain." The album it was from wasn't too shabby, but their last, non-LP, single, "Man and Machine," was a hot mess. Pretty sure Gary's got a lot of mp3s available for download on his webpage. I know I pinched the unreleased (non-reggae) rerecording of "Shadow World" off there. Boys Life did nothing for me, but I ripped something of theirs for Randy. Guess I didn't post it in this thread!

How Drumm McDowell didn't have all the major labels knocking at their door is beyond me. Their 7" single -- "Please Wait" b/w "Life of the Party" (Endangered Species, 1985) -- was easily the finest Massachusetts D.I.Y. record of the year. I wore the hell out of my first copy. Luckily, I've got 3 more that have since replaced it!

I've included their equally terrific "Heart Cries Love" off the "Sounds Eclectic" compilation (Revolution, 1986). The band that 007/Dub 7 morphed into, The Kessells, are also featured on it. Remind me to post that one.

I promised some people here New Man tracks 3 years ago and in my always timely fashion I just did them today. Never say I'm not a get-right-on-it kinda guy.

Originally a jazz-fusion group called Fly by Night, New Man turned new wave just in time to cut a self-titled 4-track EP (Cazitron, 1985) in February '85. An MTV Basement Tapes video and a big local hit, "Bad Boys," caught the ear of Epic Records, who released a full-length album, also self-titled, in August '86 -- featuring rerecorded versions of 3/4ths of the Cazitron EP. Management changes at Epic before its release caused the band to get pretty much dumped as a tax write-off. Had anyone left there bothered to actually listen to the thing before releasing it, they probably would have heard an obvious hit in "Flying Cowboy."

Freed from the CBS noose, the band, who also worked at Infocom Software on the side, veered towards roots rock in the late '80s. Because apparently every former Epic Records act signed by Dick Wingate had to turn roots rock in the late '80s. Frontman Scott Gilman later went on to a stint as Foreigner's saxophonist. The other members have been in anything and everything.

Here's the highlights of their 2 records, as well as "Video" -- the one EP track that didn't make the jump to the major-label LP. Sadly, I misplaced my copy of the "Bad Boys" video. Maybe it'll be on YouTube someday...
