Funny that you mention MTV;
I got John Craig, the head of Safari, to send me 3 videos in 83/84, don't remember exactly, two by Toyah, "Thunder In The Mountains" and "Rebel Run" and 1 from Wayne County & the Electric Chairs, "Storm The Gates Of Heaven";
out of my own pocket, I paid to get the three videos converted from UK to US broadcast standards(different amount of lines on the screen)and then contacted Roberta Kruger,then head of acquistions at MTV, and sent her the videos, and convinced her to air "Thunder"(yes, it was in light rotation for about a month) despite the fact that there was no US deal,and thereby no label support,and no Toyah in America to even make an appearance. JJ Jackson premiered "Thunder" and talked about Toyah starring in the Brit stage production of "Trafford Tanzi" as a female wrestler(it eventually came to America/Broadway as "Teaneck Tanzi",starring Debbie Harry in the role Toyah originated)
...while getting this valuable US airtime, which cost them nothing, Safari sat on their thumbs, weren't even excited that I got the video onto MTV(it was still the early days, that would be impossible now, without a lot of money changing hands)
Roberta Kruger liked Toyah so much that a month or so later, she put "Rebel Run" into lite rotation, same thing, Safari yawned, Toyah was still doing stage productions and films and that was the end of that..
Kruger was going to use the Wayne County video in a Halloween/Elvira special,but in the end, it didn't make the cut..
it dawns on me that lots of kids, like you, got a small,short glimpse of Toyah on MTV back then....because of me..
these days,such a stunt would be big $$$$$$.
back then, as a fan,it cost me a few hundred bucks out of my own pocket...
sports fans (and Springsteen fans) do similar wacky things,I suppose

On behalf of myself and the rest of the miscreants on this message board, I would like to sincerely apologize for not recognizing the greatness of all that is Toyah.

Her contribution and influence on the world of music cannot be measured. Why no one outside of the UK hasn't heard of her remains one of life's unsolvable riddles. She is the embodiment of talent, beauty and fastidious personal hygiene.

To borrow the words of an immortal poet, "WE'RE LUCKY SHE EVEN PERFORMS FOR US BASTARDS... (sniff)...".

From now on I'm making it my personal quest to enlighten those who have not yet recognized the brilliance of this overlooked genius. I will not rest until the name "Toyah" is a household word in every corner of the globe.

I must go now to my resting place and prepare for this, the culmination of my life's purpose.

I'm sure I'll regret this since the times that I bight my tongue on this board are too numerous to count, but you are just obnoxious DJ...how old are you? And feel free to rant and rave about Clare Grogan since you probably don't like her either.

Ptooey.

Better artists than Toyah on the Safari label:

Juluka
Teenbeats
English Evenings
Boys
Those French Girls

Am I forgetting anyone? Oh, well, just name every other single artist that was on the Safari label; I'm sure they were better.
