I liked both of these bands. Sex Execs "Ladies Man" got a lot of airplay on WBCN, as did Gary Shane's "Shadow World." I'll try to post those tracks sometime soon.

Originally a jazz-fusion group called Fly by Night, New Man turned new wave just in time to cut a self-titled 4-track EP (Cazitron, 1985) in February '85. An MTV Basement Tapes video and a big local hit, "Bad Boys," caught the ear of Epic Records, who released a full-length album, also self-titled, in August '86 -- featuring rerecorded versions of 3/4ths of the Cazitron EP. Management changes at Epic before its release caused the band to get pretty much dumped as a tax write-off. Had anyone left there bothered to actually listen to the thing before releasing it, they probably would have heard an obvious hit in "Flying Cowboy."

Freed from the CBS noose, the band, who also worked at Infocom Software on the side, veered towards roots rock in the late '80s. Because apparently every former Epic Records act signed by Dick Wingate had to turn roots rock in the late '80s. Frontman Scott Gilman later went on to a stint as Foreigner's saxophonist. The other members have been in anything and everything.

Here's the highlights of their 2 records, as well as "Video" -- the one EP track that didn't make the jump to the major-label LP. Sadly, I misplaced my copy of the "Bad Boys" video. Maybe it'll be on YouTube someday...

The Reflectors had a good sound. I often bought local rock records without hearing them first, and this was one of them - it was "Let Her Dance" b/w "Raining Steel". Both were decent tracks, and I still crank 'em up in the car on my MP3 player.

Only a band as delightfully-twisted as The Dark could set new wave music to nursery rhymes and the sounds of dogs barking. The Boston quintet (later sextet) released 3 records their 4 years together, most of them revealing their odd fixation on The Maps'/Salem 66's Judy Grunwald. They debuted with the "You Are In No Danger" 7" EP in 1981 (which included an offer form for a custom, personalized cassette for the low, low price of $6.66. I paid $1.49 for the 7", so suffice to say, I didn't get one. But I'd like to hear the surviving copies that are out there if anyone's still got one) from which comes "Houses R Falling." The next year, they released the "Darkworld" EP (Ambiguous, 1982), which included "We Can Be Children." A year later was their third and last release, the "Don't Feed the Fashion Sharks" EP (Relativity, 1983), highlighted by my favorite track of theirs, "Fashion Sharks." They disbanded in 1984. Late addition Reeves Gabrels -- who joined the band in their death throes (just as he did with Rubber Rodeo) -- later found some success with David Bowie in Tin Machine.

You have more than I do. Don't have any of their unreleased tapes. Was excited enough just to stumble into the video clips of "7 Digits" and "Rear View Mirror" on YouTube. Had never seen video of them before.

By the way, what was Alex Space's real name? Was it Alexander Lynn? There's a writeup at Rateyourmusic but it's full of mistakes. Obviously, a chowderhead wrote it.

The Mirrors released the alright "Stay Close" b/w "Talkin to You" 7" (Rare-view, 1980). Their label name was appropriate given how easily found this record is nowadays. The A-side has a vaguely '60s girl group chorus. The B-side... well, I think it was the in-thing for early '80s Massachusetts bands to have "I'm talking to you" choruses.

Audrey Clark later fronted New Career. I don't know if that was a completely different band or this one under a new name, as I have no recollection of them whatsoever. (I don't feel too ashamed. Jamie Shaler has no recollection of them, either -- and they shared a stage together.) If someone can help jog my memory, that would be appreciated. (ETA: According to the Library of Congress, New Career was Audrey and Michael Clark -- I don't remember the relation anymore -- plus Carmen Cocchiaro and Neil Buckley.)

Clark's early '90s band, the 360's, are probably a bit better-remembered, as they made the jump to the big leagues, with a major-label album in 1994.

Band 19 (so named after the cumulative number of bands the members had been in previously) was a short-lived Rich Parsons venture (after Unnatural Axe, The Gremies, Future Dads... actually, I think all 19 bands were his). They released the "Dictate" EP (Modern Method, 1985) and received some airplay with opening cut, "Your Eyes." In 1986, Band 19 became Disbanded 19. Alas, there was no Band 20.

An all-star (no-star outside of Boston) lineup helped out Professor Anonymous on his lone album, "Living in the World..." (Quark/Bomp, 1980), which has to be heard to be believed. Members of Nervous Eaters, The Paley Brothers, The Fools, The Neats, The Marshalls, The Space Negroes -- they're all here helping out Mr. Anonymous on what I can only imagine was recorded as one big joke. The Professor (who used the songwriting pseudonym Bobby Hyde and whose real name is Robert Huffhines) also released a 7" EP the same year featuring a track that would have been perfect for this time of year... except I remembered I don't have it. Another one of the EP's tracks, "It's Surprising (What a Little Change Can Do)," can also be found on "The Boston Incest Album" (Sounds Interesting).

Three former members of Live Lobster formed Balloon in the late '70s. The Charlie Farren-led quintet, who strode the line somewhere between hard rock and new wave, scored on Boston radio in 1979 and 1980 with some unreleased tracks. Balloon's only released tune back in their heyday, "Political Vertigo," came from the compilation LP "WCOZ 94 1/2 FM Rock 'n' Roll The Best of the Boston Beat Volume II" (Starstream, 1981).

Farren later went to the majors with The Joe Perry Project (who rerecorded 2 popular WBCN/WCOZ Balloon radio tapes, "Listen to the Rock" and "East Coast, West Coast") and Farrenheit, whose 1987 debut single, "Fool in Love," I thought was going to be a major hit when I first heard it. It didn't even chart!

The Medford, MA trio Breakfast in Bed spouted nonsense lyrics over funky beats. I bought their last EP back around 1985 because of a song called "Peak" (which I either heard on the radio or when they did the Rumble -- who remembers) and promptly forgot all about it until people here started talking about them and opened the floodgates. Breakfast in Bed debuted with the "Australian Coffee" LP (Crunch, 1982) and followed it up with a pair of EPs, "Lust Drive" (Crunch, 1983) and "And Now What?" (Crunch, 1984). Frontman Dana Giacchetto (who used the pseudonym Dana Caus) -- a banker on the side -- split up the band in the mid '80s and then formed the similar-sounding Waterworld with a new group of backing musicians. Their self-titled EP (Crunch, 1987) -- in which Dana reverted to his real surname -- I didn't buy because of any songs; I bought it because there's a sailor on the cover and I wanted to join the Navy. (The letter "T" and sailors... who can figure me out.)

Giacchetto later became a money manager to the stars. Only he managed the stars' money a little too well. So well, in fact, they couldn't seem to find any of it. Giacchetto ended up having to rebuild, rebuild in the big house.

"Peak" and "Tenderloin" (horrid song, but I remember somebody here wanted to hear it) come from the "And Now What?" EP. "Big Daddy" is off the "Waterworld" EP.
