Man, I'm having a hell of a time with this. Coop mentioned in the albums thread that he thought it was more of a singles year. I actually think the complete opposite. I've really looked at the year from a totally album-oriented angle, and it's been a great album year at that. Here's my shot, basically taking some favorite tracks from favorite albums and likely missing a lot of one-off singles. Listing is in sort of mix mode, ie. no repeat bands even though many of my favorite bands would make the list two or three times otherwise.

There are always lots of new things I find out about just by looking at the next wave topic. This seemed like a singles year, as few groups sustained a full album worth for me. I didn't listen to The Rake's Song that much until I put in on my 2009 mix CD. Every time it comes on in my car, the more blown away I am by this song. It's at the nearly ear-splitting volumes that the full power of this song really takes hold. I don't know that there's been another song like it the entire decade. It's incredibly original, bizarrely brutal, and unbelievably compelling. I'm really starting to see the twisted genius of this song...

Although now it strikes me that the video is far less interesting than just the song alone - it leaves too little to the imagination. In my mind, the "video" was a much darker Brothers Grimm or Washington Irving affair. Cool live version here that's better than the video imho...
