It's a great album even if it runs out of steam across the last 4 songs, and despite the hippy collective/Polyphonic Spree look of the band, I hear a lot more rockabilly and 60's folk-pop more akin to Neil Diamond or Harry Nilsson than "Jesus Christ Superstar".

For me 2009 was a year of individual tracks rather than full-length albums (a symptom of our i-Tunes times?). Although this is technically a 2008 release it got it's stateside release in 2009. For some reason this song reminds me of Friday nights at the much missed Aldo's Hideaway in Lodi, NJ, my back up against the wall, underneath the Public Image Ltd. poster, .50 cent draft in my hand, trying to muster up the courage to ask THAT girl to dance.

Ghosty, while this might technically belong in the 2009's singles thread, I'm sure Coop doesn't mind - I think he's still got the hots for the chick drummer in dolphin shorts and wife-beater t-shirt. Great live. [8D]


BTW, both the Zeros and Rebellion albums fall into my middle-of-the-pack grouping - neither to be overly lauded nor scorned. I never could quite get into the Zeros. Boxer Rebellion however are crawling up my list and should likely have made my top 20. It's a really easy album to listen to, but I'm not sure what would really set it apart from the Coldplay/Interpol/Radiohead amalgamations that twattish cuntball reviewers tend to love. I think they just missed it.

Aldo's was in Lyndhurst, not Lodi Don't go looking for it![:D] I used to DJ there as a fill-in for Ted in the mid-90's. When it closed down, I also did a few other one-off type DJ spots at Axis, The Loop and the Goldhawk in Hoboken.

Really appreciate seeing your picks, I might have missed out on The Phantom Band and The Horrors - yep, dark & swirly! I can't even put together my top list since there are so many picks here I don't recognize. Though I do have to say I couldn't make it through a few minutes of some of them.

Ack! Middle-aged brainfart. I've actually driven down to the vacant lot that is now the former site of Aldo's on a Friday night just to reminisce. I never could get into any of the other surrogate clubs like Traxx and Axis who tried to keep the Aldo's nights going. The last time I stopped into Axis there was dwarf tossing and Hip Hop booming from the loudspeakers! Thank God for the Loop Lounge.

Agreed. Traxx and Axis weren't suitable replacements. I only did one gig at Traxx and Axis maybe 2 or 3. The Goldhawk in Hoboken was a cool hangout, but not a dance club. I only DJ'd there when the band I managed (The Lost Patrol) played there. I usually split the duties with Mike C (Cimicata) or Pat Pierson. A good nite just for hanging and listening to killer tunes. Very sad to see that place close too. Surely, it will become just another lame yuppie raw bar or something much worse. I don't really go out much anymore being a husband and father, but I did recently help organize a Mark Burgess solo acoustic show at the Loop back in August. Maybe 25 people showed up, but Mark was wicked great!

There is a certain melancholy there of which ye speak. I too used to hang at Aldo's Hideaway "back in the day" eek. The liquid courage wasn't enough for me to ask that boy to dance.

My favorite album of the year hands down comes from a band called Moon Duo out of Frisco. They are sparse, fuzzy, quite melodic and on that ultra hip label Sacred Bones (of which I truly don't know anything about). Don't ask me why but this stuff really grabbed me...

Two groups that really grew up this year were the Horrors and The Twilight Sad - both had fantastic new albums this year far far above anything else they've ever put out. I agree with Blir that "Primary Colors" is going to be up there high on my classics list, it reminded me of listening to the Bunnymen's "Heaven Up Here" the first time way back in the day (not stylistically, just that it pulled me in that much).

I also really liked Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest or however u spell it. Sort of has that Fleet Foxes feel to it, "mellow out your soul" tunes.
Wooden Shjips put out another killer album called "Dos" if u like Spacemen 3 and that type of thing. BTW their guitarist is the guitarist/songwriter for Moon Duo. Go figure.

Since I'm partial to Philly stuff, Kurt Vile is my fave from that town, his first album on Matador is awesome. Can't follow the Cold Cave bit yet but I am trying.

Flaming Lips - Embryonic (wow)

The Thom Yorke track on that Twilight New Moon soundtrack.

Alan Vega and ARE Weapons 2 song 12 inch collaboration. Not for everyone, but I dig it.

Titus Andronicus - a little band from Jersey that could.

HTRK's second album on Blast First Petite and I think it's called "Marry Me tonight". OK, no problem.

A Place To Bury Strangers I exploding Head (right up there with the Horrors).

Jay Reatard's "Watch Me Fall" IMHO is as important as "Doolittle" from the Pixies (obviously somebody he emulated) and it is a shame he left this world too soon before he could put out his Trompe Le Monde...

Last but not least Rowland S. Howard's "Pop Crimes" is also a fine footnote to an illustrious career from the former Birthday Party genius and one of the most inventive guitarists of the 80's.

PS...And finally I guess I'm a sad and trendy "cuntball" because I am really starting to love the xx album and find it quite intriguing.

Looking forward to 2010 and a new Panda Bear album and an album release from the London trio called Graffiti Island. What can I say, I like that psychedelic throwback stuff.

[:D] "Cunt balls" referred to the so-called authorities on music not including the Boxer Rebellion's album in their tops. I like the xx album as well - it's good trendy now music, but it won't be anything to look back on as noteworthy 10-15 years from now. And they absolutely blow live.
