Is the NFL unwatchable?

The word here in MN is that Farve has said it's "highly unlikely" he'll return. Only Farve knows for sure and he's so wishy-washy that he could change his mind multiple times. Farve butted heads with Childress over play calling and Farve being able to audible when he wanted to. For me, the only thing the follicly-challenged coach ever did right was to sign Farve, which got the coach a 4 year contract extension. I still hope he gets his ass fired. If Farve doesn't return the Vikes could easily be a 500 team next year with Jackson or Rosenfeld at quarterback.

As a Jet fan who enjoyed the crazy ride this year I'll be hunkered down in the basement with a plate of wings and a beer rooting for the Saints. It's not sour grapes. I've got nothing against the Colts or Manning. I fully expected them to beat my Jets last weekend and I actually like that team. The Saints are a great story. How could ya not root for them? (unless you're in Indianapolis). [;)]

Ghosty, Your Jets like the Saints never got the credit they deserved from the media this year. Ryan is a great coach and will most likely get the team even farther in the future. It's nice to see all you guys pulling for the Saints in the bowl. Vegas is giving Indy a 6 point favorite but I think we have a mission and will stop at nothing to accomplish the goal. Win or Lose it has been a fairy tale season and this town will still be tremendously grateful to the team for the season they have given us.

I don't think you Saints fans have anything to worry about. The NFL wants you to win this game and you will even if they have to give it to you like they gave the Steelers the victory over Seattle in SB XL (aka Jerome Bettis' going away present from the league).

Oh yeah ... I'm going to absolutely fucking hammer the Saints.

It's currently at Saints +5.5 at the main book I use. I'm debating whether to take them with the points or bet them to win straight up, which pays 1.75 to 1. Interestingly enough, by my calculations, a 5.5 pt. underdog SHOULD be offered at around a 2.05 to 1 moneyline. That right there tells you the books are scared shitless of getting hurt badly by Saints ML bets.

I like the points as well and I do think there is the hesitancy there. If I recall, the books have gotten hammered on the Super Bowl fairly regularly over the past few years. A straight up victory would be no surprise to me. I actually think we are going to have our second great Super Bowl in a row. Something needs to make up for this ridiculously dismal season.

Rooting for the Colts in the Super Bowl is like rooting for the Yankees in the World Series. The entire country wants to see them lose except for the locals. (or if you have $$$ on them )

I find this game ridiculously hard to handicap. I kinda like the Saints with the points, especially since the Colts always do seem to play juuuuust good enough to win (as evidenced by their seven 4th-quarter comebacks this year). But then again, when was the last time the Colts lost a game that mattered? If you toss out the last two games of this season (throwaway games - literally) they've won something like 23 of their last 24 games - and the only game they lost was an overtime playoff game last year where they never touched the ball in OT.

Then there's the "experience on the grand stage" factor - the Colts have it, the Saints are the newbies. Hard to pick against Happy Feet Manning in a game like this. Throw in a marginal Saints secondary and I'm thinking 37-27 Colts, though I'd rather it be 37-27 Saints.

The one positive about the Colts winning the Super Bowl is that at least advertisers will FINALLY start hiring Peyton to do some commercials. I'd just like him to do, ohhhh, 7,000-8,000 more commercials per week. Because goshdarnit I just don't see enough of the guy yet. Is that too much to ask?

There are a lot of very good experienced handicappers who see this game the same way you do. A lot of them have it as being a 3 point margin right down to the very end, with the Colts tacking on a "meaningless" TD to win by 10. Then there are those who argue that the NFL wants Peyton to win more than they want to Saints because he is their golden boy and he's more marketable than Brees ever will be. I don't know ... there are a lot more good arguments for the Colts than there are for the Saints but the one thing I know for sure about this league is that nothing ever does make sense. I'm still taking the Saints huge.

I don't ever buy the argument of "the NFL wants (insert team here) to win" - if that was the case, the Cardinals would have never made the Super Bowl last year and you would DEFINITELY be seeing a Favre/Manning matchup this year instead of Brees/Manning. "The NFL wants (X) to win" always comes across like sour grapes from the losing side. As for hammering the Saints ... I moderately like them with the points, not so much on the money line - hard to bet against a team that could be 18-0 if not for a couple of meaningless games.

Last night I actually saw a commercial that didn't have Peyton Manning in it! It was for Depends. Give him 10 years, he'll be pitching for them too.
