Bud Cockrell..Pablo Cruise Bassist...RIP

Bud Cockrell,founding member / Bassist & vocalist for "Top Notch" California band, Pablo Cruise passed away last week.
Bud was a founding member of 60's band,"It's A Beautiful Day", then , "Pablo Cruise" & then , "Cockrell & Santos".
Bud was a powerful vocalist on such Pablo songs as , "Watcha Gonna Do" & "A Place In The Sun" & influential Bassist.



BUD COCKRELL, the original bassist and vocalist with PABLO CRUISE, died on SATURDAY, MARCH 6th from complications from infection due to diabetes, Among other physical ailments.
There is a service for COCKRELL in GREENVILLE, MS. on THURSDAY at 2p where he will be buried next to his father. The service will be held at: SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 1580 So. Colorado St., GREENVILLE, MS.

I knew your Father, my friend Bud, from the beginnings of the Pablo Cruise band. I was an engineer in the Record Plant studio when they cut their demo for A&M Records that got them their record deal.
I hung out with those guys and worked with all of them on various recording projects.
When he split Pablo Cruise, I asked him why he left the band and he told me that he wanted to go out when he was "on top." At that point in history, Pablo Cruise WAS on the top of the heap. I thought it was a gutsy move on his part, but I admired him for making that move.
When it came time to record his new group, the Cockrell-Santos Band, I was pleased and honored thathat Bud thought enough of me to be the recording engineer for those dates at Record Plant in Sausalito, CA.
His infectious joy and sense of humor was always a source of inspiration to me ... and those around him. We had a ball!
Our paths didn't really cross much after that. However, we did have some great laffs a few years later when we met up at David Jenkins' wedding at Stinson Beach.
His voice and musicianship were par excellence. His love of life was equally inspired. I am so glad to be able to say that I knew, worked with and was a friend of Bud Cockrell. I will miss that man a whole lot.
He was one fine dude.
