Morrissey- New or Next Wave ?

Postby basstone » Mon Jun 07, 2010 12:46 pm

Just wondering if Morrissey is now Considered Next wave
or would he still be more of a New Wave topic?

Also I'm amazed or confused why he has not been given
more air time by the "Main Stream" Radio Networks ?
He's been putting killer songs since 2000, yet I had never
heard any of these song on the Radio ???

LOL, oh you didn't just go there. Call it what you want, it's how you think and relate to it. We can't even agree on what's new wave in the 80's. LOL!!
As far as radio play, your right, the younger underground crowd adore Morrissey. Not your typical radio play in todays fragmented market.

Actually I've played all of those songs multiple times on my radio show and I'm sure you'll hear them on Altrock too. They get played. Just not on the big dinosaur stations.

Yeah The Smiths were not exactly "New Wave", but they were a part
of the new wave of music that was coming out in the 80's!

Post Punk, Alt-rock (before Alt-Rock was coined), but at the end of
the day I don't think anyone who likes New Wave would have an
issue calling the Smiths New Wave.

I'm wondering why none of these song have not been played ad nausium
like many other Less Catchy, Lower quality, uninteresting songs.
That I seem to hear 5-10 times a day?

Like when Cold Play and Moby were all the rage, Morrissey's stuff
blew them away.

All the following bands were on the radio far more than Morrissey,
yet he was just as good or better (Depending on personal taste).
Oasis
REM
Jelew
Radio head
Social D.
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Weezer
Hoobastank
Keane
Modest Mouse
4 non blondes
Lush
L7
Flaming Lips
Stone Roses
Alanis Morissette

It's just seems odd that he wouldn't get more air play. I guess
I was just shocked, because a friend of mine showed me all these cool
Moz songs, that I had never heard before, and they were already
~10yrs old by the time I'd heard them.

Well I no longer rely on the Radio to play good new Music. I actually
look on the Next Wave Section of this forum.

Cheers

The way I see it, artists like Morrissey, Depeche Mode, New Order, Pet Shop Boys and Cure defy categorization. Calling them New Wave or 80's bands is like calling the Rolling Stones a 60's band. These bands have consistently been making new music for decades. Only associating them with the decade that spawned them can be a little one-dimensional.

By the way, "Main Stream" Radio Networks are ass-tarded.

I think its about audience demographics and age. Morrissey puts out great material, but my guess is that the radio stations (and Arbitron) don't promote him because his core audience is in the 40 - 50 age range (an audience whose media entertainment budget drops significantly). The radio stations and record companies push product that appeals to younger audiences, ideally artists which have major growth potential and weak licensing/royalty contracts with their labels.

In most cases of legacy bands I would agree with you Sally. But in the case of Morrissey. I often witness the opposite. It's the younger crowd in their 20's who are more in tune with Morrissey, in fact fanatical.

Sally is absolutely correct. While Morrissey may have a following of fanatical twenty-somethings, his crowd is nowhere near as large as someone young and current like Lady GaGa's or even as large as an older act's like Green Day. Not to mention the fact that Morrissey (and The Smiths) never broke through on a mainstream level the way a band like U2 did (both U2 and Morrissey are heritage acts at this point, except U2 are obviously much bigger).

Even mainstream radio stations that play heritage acts or "rock oldies" ignore Morrissey because he's too fringe for them. Classic Rock Radio has been very cold to alternative artists from the 80's because they don't fit in with a format based around Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, etc. Can you imagine a Morrissey song segueing into REO Speedwagon? Even when a band like The Rolling Stones put out a new record, the single only gets a few courtesy spins and then is never heard from again.

As far as mainstream radio is concerned, you might hear Morrissey on two types of commercial FM stations. What I call the "Starbucks stations" i.e. stations aimed at listeners 40+ and feature singer/songwriters with a handful of mellow Indie artists and the occasional curveball (which would be where Morrissey comes in) or "Rock in a blender stations", where a station plays a mix of popular Indie, classic rock, 90's rock and a few 80's New Wave/Alternative hits (and even then it would probably be one of about 4 songs from The Smiths and not anything current from Morrissey)..

Also all these stations, regardless of format, are all owned by about 4 companies and cutting through the corporate bullshit, especially when it dictates what the entire country hears, to get some decent music played is pretty tough going.

Ganglord is the best song he's produced in 15 years

Also, I'll mention that Morrissey is over 50 and has had highly publicized health problems. Just a theory, but maybe his age and questionable health create an image problem with the record labels. I think the release of 'Years of Refusal' was delayed because Morrissey lacked a US/Global distributor. (By the way, I thought 'Years of Refusal' was one of the best albums of 2009).

<p align="justify">"Alternative." I remember seeing Morrissey's video get more airplay on Alternative Nation and 120 Minutes. He's not BritPop and The Smiths never sounded New Wave to me, so "Alternative" is a general, encompassing genre to place his music in. I love his stuff; have every album of his[}:)]

I have will yet to see a valid description of why one band or song is New Wave and why one isn't. In the broad pantheon of Rock music, are The Smiths/Morrissey really THAT different from say, The Psychedelic Furs, The Cure, The Damned, Talking Heads or any number of "New Wave" groups? (Preparing for onslaught of rabid responses claiming these weren't New Wave either).

If so, please explain why. What is it that sets The Smiths outside the category that fits any number of their contemporaries?

The subject matter of their songs- alienation, angst, indignation, fits right in with their NW peers. Was it Johhny Marrs' jangly guitar (yeah, like other NW groups weren't using THAT), Morrisseys' pained vocals (ubiquitous to New Wave) or was it something about the drums? Do you define New Wave as requiring a synthesizer?

It's easy to throw out a claim ("heavy words are so lightly thrown") but something quite different to explain and define why.
