From any single non-compilation album? It's easy to get 2 or 3. With 4 you got a fine album. 5 is a whole other level I think.

Not very creative I admit, but I suppose the classics are the classics for a reason.

It's a bit tricky, because often great albums with 3 or 4 great songs in a row will then add a song to change the tempo a bit. Often those 3 or 4 songs are so good that it almost makes it easy to like that affirmative-action song.

Many of the Best Debut Albums topic are like this. Each album has, say 10 to 12 songs, and in each case 8 to 10 of them are great.

I felt this way about a bunch of the 80's guitar bands-- U2 (Boy, War), Tears for Fears (Hurting), INXS (Swing, LLT), Midnight Oil (10 - 1), The Alarm (Declaration), Big Country (Crossing).

I'm probably already in trouble with the new wave taste nazis so I won't bother mentioning The Thompson Twins Quickstep And Sidekick album, especially since it has different track sequences in different countries.

I don't consider The Damned to be New Wave, but those are my two favorite records by them (with Strawberries just edging out MGE for the top spot).

The Smiths are almost not fair. Their albums are so densely packed with great songs-- sometimes not because the songs themselves are good, but because their "sound" is so classic.

From start to finish, which would be 12 songs if you include the two bonus tracks on the CD, Berlin's Love Life. I can't skip a single song on that album. Same goes for the Moroder/Oakey collaboration album if you take it from the CD perspective (because there are only 4 songs on each side of the record). The album is also a continous mix. Another album would be Erasure's "The Innocents". An absolute perfect album (and Wonderland is pretty much one as well).

I agree, unless 'Lava' has to be disqualified on a technicality-- it's on side 2. A couple other great LPs whose four-song side 1s are absolutely unmissable:

Tinderbox by the Banshees ('Candyman', 'The Sweetest Chill', 'This Unrest', 'Cities In Dust')
The Wonderful and Frightening World of the Fall ('Lay of the Land', '2 x 4', 'Copped It', 'Elves')

And I agree with SallyLightfoot-- a band as great as the Smiths is almost not fair. They don't even need the stupid 'best of' comps-- buy the real albums for God's sake!
