To sum up:

Kylie in the 80's: Not New Wave
Kylie in the past 17 years: consistently Electro/Synthpop but not New Wave because New Wave belongs to a time period.

This is not true at all about New Wave having a time period Ghosty.Don't you realize that all kinds of music comes back in cycles? New Wave is back again now as we speak,but with new artists singing the songs and music.

I suppose what you say could be true, as trends tend to "cycle" and recycle.

But I agree that, to be true to the New Wave genre (whatever the heck that is), the time period is important. Anything close that is produced nowadays, to my ear, may "sound like" new wave, but is nothing more.

In the meantime, I'm waiting for the next ska revival.

I'll just restate what I said way back in 2004:

"I don't think of New Wave music as an ongoing concern, just a label used to define a certain sound from a certain time period. Same with Alternative. That's my way of looking at it anyway. I don't expect everyone to fall in line with that because we all have our own interpretations.

For example, if you say Psychedelic Rock just about anyone will immediately think of the 60's and yet there were Psychedelic-sounding records released last year! Are those records made in the same spirit as their original 60's counterparts or are those records merely an affectionate tip of the hat to a bygone era?"

As for New Wave being back, there certainly were quite a number of New Wave inspired bands back in 2003 through 2008 and that sound became fashionable again but I wouldn't lump The Rapture in with Gang Of Four. As I see it, the New Wave revival is more or less over and Indie/Alt/whatever is entering into one of it's dormant periods which means we'll get tons of garage rock inspired stuff and sensitive singer/songwriter stuff until the next wave of nostalgia hits (possibly this time next year with the 20th anniversary rerelease of "Nevermind"). Of course, it's entirely probable that Rock as a cultural force is dead and we may wind up with little niche genres which regurgitate older genres over and over again for a small boutique type of audience that appreciates them.

After all, has there been anything that's taken the world by storm in Rock since 1992? Nearly 20 years of some bad music and some decent music but nothing to hang a generation on. First time that's ever happened. Hip Hop and Pop is, of course, another story.
