80's Super-groups

so what do you think if the choice is Toto vs Chicago....? Anyone like this stuff enough to have a preference? Which one do you prefer?

please don't answer Yes or Foreigner, that's another possible future question [:p]

Chicago had more hits throughout the 80s, even with the switch of lead singer, as well a many productions by the king of ballads, David Foster, but they also had ALL ballads--kind of putting them in the same category as Air Supply. Toto had what I think is one of the most amazing songs of the 80s, Africa, but after that and Roseanna, most of their other hits of the decade are forgettable. So it's a tough call. In general, I don't think either could be considered a top supergroup of the 80s. I guess when I think of supergroups, I tend to think of power rock/arena rock.

To answer your first question: Chicago...simply because they had plenty of hits from their 16, 17, 18 and 19 albums. 12 Top 40 Hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 80s, of which 8 of them entered the Top 10...2 of which hit #1, one for each Peter Cetera ("Hard To Say I'm Sorry" - 2 weeks) and Jason Scheff ("Look Away" - 2 weeks) as lead vocalist. By the way, am I the only one that thought Chicago's 1986 version of "25 Or 6 To 4" was awesome?

Toto had their success as well...9 Top 40 Hits on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 80s, of which 3 entered the Top 10. Surprisingly, "Africa" only logged 1 week at #1. There's one song by them which I felt was robbed from Top 40 status..."Straight For The Heart" (their follow-up to "Pamela").


Future question: My answer would be Foreigner, as their 2 massive 80s hits "Waiting For A Girl Like You" (#2 for 10 weeks) and "I Want To Know What Love Is" (#1 for 2 weeks) trump "Owner Of A Lonley Heart" (#1 for 2 weeks) by Yes.

Heart (to answer the next, next question question). Can the Wilson sisters be classified as a Super-group? [;)]

Considering they really had a whole band behind them, I'd say Heart totally could be considered a super group. And really, Ann's voice was at it's most amazingly powerful during their 85 - 87 period.

Personally, despite the charting success of I Want To Know and Waiting for a Girl, the ultimate 80s Foreigner song for me has to be Urgent.

yeah that's a good track, I did not know how well it did commercially. I like their mid 80's stuff with Joseph Williams, despite the heavy use of synths which date it a bit. [:D]

Asia was another band often put in that group... killer intro melody on Only Time Will Tell

making this topic on a NW forum I was well aware of possible negative comments. We all have our own views. I personally think these bands were good musicians and released pleasant commercial songs with strong vocals. They did not try to be alternative in any way, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.

this is a general new wave AND 80s discussion board, so I really don't see the problem with this thread. If nothing else, the internet has proven that arrogance and snobbery doesn't die in high school and people never really grow up.

+1. As Schwenko mentions one only needs to see the title of the website to realize to see what the focus of the Outpost is. If people here want to post things about artists that are clearly not in the (incredibly broad definition that we use here) for NW, they should expect some snark. If this displeases you I have no doubt there are lots of blogs concerning Arena rock bands of the '80s where you have little fear of a negative reaction.


And for the record I quite like pre-74 era Chicago.
