Speaking of being old enough to be a scary monster, my Bowie must-see-T.V. clip of the day has to be that 1980 Johnny Carson appearance. "Life On Mars?" and "Ashes To Ashes" without a commercial break. My God, Ziggy really sang.

I remember watching The Carson performance the night it happened. This thread led me to research some more Bowie vids. Found lots of cool stuff I had never seen before.

On 76's Station To Station album, Bowie first recorded "Wild Is The Wind", a vocal standard that seemed out of place on this otherwise Krautrockish album. None the less, the song was arresting as it was stark and beautiful. Some consider it his best cover ever.

I always wanted more. In my dream, Bowie comes out of retirement and records a whole album of standards from the 30s and 40s. If Rod Stewart can crap out 4 albums of banal pop standard covers, Bowie could surely make one that is more than deserving of the material. Until then there are many live Bowie versions of "Wild Is The Wind" performances from just the last 10 years on Youtube.

I was shuttling through an '83 tour rehearsals tape and realized he had shortlisted WITW for Serious Moonlight. There were a number of left-of-centre picks in the list, actually: Stay, Joe The Lion, Star, Red Sails. (Of course, it's not as strange when one considers the records he'd been making in the half-decade leading up to Let's Dance. Whatta catalogue, however you slice it.)

I probably hadn't even heard of Bowie when that Carson aired, but I imagine it gave his fans both goosebumps and a charge of pride, watching him deliver two great songs to mainstream television with so much bravado. The '79 'SNL' still takes the cake for his U.S. TV spots, but this is most worthy!

BTW on Bowie's Sound And Vision tour he employed these two amazing dancers. A male and female duo who's incredibly physically intense dancing almost made me wonder if the were going to cause irreparable harm to each other. Anybody remember this and know where there is any video?

Hey DJ -

The girl's name was Louise LaCavalier and the dance troupe was Edouard Lock's La La La Human Steps. They were based out of Montreal. I have a MuchMusic interview from March 8, 1990 - the day after his Toronto show - where he talks about them - and her in particular.

I think they were only used in the first leg of the tour. Certainly by the time he passed through Toronto again (July 4, 1990) he was playing the stripped-down set. There is one performance I recall on TV: the June 8, 1990 International Rock Awards telecast beamed in a satellite performance of "Suffragette," likely from one of that week's Texas dates. I have the following on VHS. All that's missing is Sam Kinison and Gary Busey mangling his name in their intro: "Here he is: Daaaa-vid Boyyyy!"
