Gotta agree with that. The song "Waterloo" alone is better than any pop song by anyone in the 80's. In my opinion, however, the golden age of Top 40 pop was clearly the 60's. I may have affection for Top 40 pop hits of the 80's because I grew up during that period but nothing from the 80's approaches the sheer pop ecstasy of this:

offtopic but I will comment,

that Ronettes song is a very well crafted pop song indeed, and at the time there were some others. But better than ABBA? I would not say that... just by their catalog of great memorable tunes, ABBA wins here..

as far as that being better than 80's, that also depends on the person. For example, I find the bouncy/synth sound arrangements of 80's girl-groups like for example Fun Fun, Flirts, Bananarama and Expose to be quite interesting as well... that's because I like synth and rhythmic music...really depends on the person.

Well, it's ALWAYS in the ear of the beholder. If I were comparing bodies of work I'd have to give it to ABBA too. The Ronettes had an incredibly short run. That said, I think "Be My Baby" is a better written and arranged song than many ABBA tracks.

I would say that "at the time there were some others". There were MANY others, moreso than any other time in history outside of the early 20th century. In my opinion, the entire output of The Beach Boys during the 60's ("I Get Around" "God Only Knows", "Good Vibrations", "When I Grow Up", "Kiss Me Baby", etc ) blows away most everybody else in terms of pure perfect pop music. Even The Four Seasons (if you wanna give the east coast it's due) lay waste to most everything that came after with songs like "Rag Doll", "Big Man In Town", "Let's Hang On", etc....again...in my opinion.

I'm not so much a fan of rhythmic/synth music when it comes to Pop. To me, that's a way of covering a multitude of sins (lack of dynamics, weak melody, simple and repetitive chord changes). It CAN be done and it sometimes is but not often....or at least not often enough for me since it's all a matter of personal taste.

Getting back to Roxette, I only know two of their songs, "The Look" and "It Must've Been Love" and I can't find anything interesting or exciting about them...but it's probably not my type of music if I'm holding The Ronettes up as an example of what I think Pop muisc should strive to match. [;)]

Roxette's new single hits number 18 in Germany! Hooray for Roxette, old timers still got some of that magic [:D]

also seems it's at 34 in Belgium, and at 22 in Austria, and 13 in Hungary

Any country that makes David Hasselhoff into a national icon can't be trusted to discriminate music quality. But when you add those other blockbuster countries in, it becomes a compelling argument. Probably only a matter of time before it hits #1 in the Philippines and THAT is the final measure of greatness.

Considering that Germany gave "The Hoff" two Number one hits, isn't that kinda like being the best neurosurgeon in Antarctica?

Looks like Craig beat me to the comparsion [:D]

so? And "Who Let the Dogs out" was a huge hit in US.... what's your point? I strongly doubt Hoff is worse than Baha Men. Does that mean anything that becomes popular in US is bad?

but considering that Germany not only has your average US pop of Gaga's and Beyonces etc, but also their own schlager pop and even some other europop in their charts... I would say German charts give average listeners a bit more to choose from...

Perhaps they do. So feel free to expound your undying love of Roxette on the Schlager Pop Outpost.

This being the New Wave outpost however.....don't be surprised if your posts get more than their fair share of ridicule and snark.

who says Roxette is schlager? I just listed some of the things in German charts, along with US pop artists.... considering that in the 80's Gazebo and Desireless both had major hits in Germany, I think German charts are nothing to frown upon...well at least for me personally.... I think I used schlager more loosely here referring to German-language pop in general, which I think sometimes charts in national German charts...

but like or dislike them that's your opinion, but a fact is they are number 18, pretty good for a 25 year old band, and if you look at Per's career with Gyllene Tider that's 35 years of making music [:D]

Ah well. As Hawkeye Pierce said to Frank Burns on an old episode of MASH "You invite abuse...it would be impolite not to accept". Good luck banging your head against the metaphorical wall here on the Outpost.

This just in:

If Roxette aspires to hit #1 in Austria they'll have to knock off the current chart topper- that sensational luminary known as Cornelia Mooswalder. Not an easy task.

In their home country of Sweden, Roxette has yet to break into the top 40. Their only hopes of hitting #1 rest in releasing the current stranglehold "Eldkvarn" has on it. But if former #1 position holder "Mikrofonkat" could be eclipsed there is always hope.

In related news, North Korea leader Kim Jong Il's unprecedented run of 1,040 consecutive weeks at #1 with his cover of "Heartbreak Hotel", doesn't look to end anytime soon. Recent challenger, Korean sensation Lee D. Gung Gung held the #2 position with a bullet until Gung Gung's musical career was abruptly cut short... by a bullet.

In Hungary, Roxette continues to face stiff musical competition from men pounding on rocks outside of thatched roof hovels.

I don't know what's better, Roxette in the charts or 2 pages of "hot topic" on them here at NWO.... aaahh I'd say it's a toss up. I don't think even their record label can give them that good of publicity, actually considering I haven't heard them on US pop radio in two decades, I know it can't [:D]

actually September is a wonderful pop dance artist, I've enjoyed a few of her tunes in the past, imho very good stuff in that genre of music...that new song of hers is in Swedish, but it is rather engaging..

it is actually a bit strange that Roxette haven't done better in Sweden with their new single. But we'll see.

The post above conclusively proves that you're either a) the biggest troll the Outpost has seen since the Halcyon Georgie Rockwood days or b)You actually believe about 50 posts on a blog that has little or no relationship to Roxette will help them sell even one more unit of product. This makes you so deluded that a whole truck full of haloperidol wouldn't help you clinically.

In either event, I'm done here. Enjoy your status as resident Urkel of the Outpost.
