Simple reasoning here - Labels are greedy, and never want to throw good money down the shitter, so maybe there was a good reason for not green lighting what would best be described as a marginal artist, ie., there was no market for her "music".

Again, ratings are everything, and I'm sure MTV had a good handle on what would be watched, and what would cause the channel to be changed. Toyah is the ultimate channel changer. These things have a way of working themselves out...talent rises, lack of talent sinks.

Simple reasoning here - Labels are greedy, and never want to throw good money down the shitter, so maybe there was a good reason for not green lighting what would best be described as a marginal artist, ie., there was no market for her "music".

Safari Records is the UK label that signed Toyah;
they were the ones who didn't green light Copeland's offer,and giving her the green light for America would have made them money, even if she had sold no records here,they still would have been paid for the licensing rights...

in 1983, Roberta Kruger, aquisitions director for MTV at the time, put Toyah's "Thunder In The Mountains" into light rotation on MTV for about a month,as the station loved the video, knew she was successful in the UK..
even though it was only an import, no U.S. label, no money/favors behind it..
what did Safari do to support it in America? absolutely nothing...MTV tried again a few months later, a month of light rotation for another Top 20 single, "Rebel Run", and again, the UK did nothing...
it seemed like they weren't even interested in America at all...
same thing happened when they signed Juluka, who somehow got themselves onto Warner Bros. later on with the "Scatterlings" album, and left an impression on Paul Simon...

by the way, numbskull, a signing fee is paid upfront, regardless of if an artist sells or not, and at the time the album "Anthem" had gone UK platinum and stayed near the top of the UK chart for a year,she had three UK top ten singles that year,and had been voted female vocalist of the year at the early version of "The Brits" Awards,defeating many of your 'faves"...so I imagine several hundred thousands of dollars would have been involved in a U.S. signing deal, at minimum...I love how you celebrate your cluelessness

Several hundred thousand, sure. I know when I'm offered several hundred thousand up front I always take time to carefully think through if I actually want it or not. Especially when there are no strings attached...that always complicates the decision making process.
