a couple of the five star albums have recently been reissued with bonus tracks and I picked them up. Good 80s synth funk pop. Kinda remind me of the Jets (although Five Star came first).

So, Collector's Choice Music had listed the Beat Street soundtracks volume 1 & 2 on their site months ago, so I pre-ordered them. I think they were supposed to be exclusives. But I recently got a notice that the order was canceled, so all I can assume is that the plan to release them fell through.

speaking of synth-funk and 'new wave-r&b', Cherry Red is reissuing the Pointer Sisters' album Contact with all the remixes as bonus tracks. Funny, considering the original CD was a 7 dollar cutout by the time I got a CD player in 87. And yet, Breakout has not been reissued yet with the deluxe treatment!

I've also recently checked out the 1983, 1984, and 1985 albums from Evelyn King, the 3 albums that followed Get Loose (with Love Come Down on it). Some good stuff on these, but they are all out of print and really need to be released on CD, which will hopefully happen now that Get Loose was reissued.

how about Billy Ocean... I really like this album track of his called "Bitter Sweet", an awesome slice of 80 synth funk, or maybe just not as overplayed as some of his other songs. Nowadays Billy looks more like a grey-haired Eddy Grant [:D]

I know this post is a few months old, but Break Out is actually getting a 2-disc deluxe reissue in late August containing both the original 1983 (never before released on CD) and the more common 1984 remixed version along with remixes and single versions.

I remember going through some Billboards as a kid who noticed that a lot of New Wave-related songs starting to pop up on the Disco/Dance chart. Plus, "Pocket Calculator" was a HUGE hit in Detroit (Originally the area where I was from), and I'm sure that it encouraged that style even more around there.

As for New Wave groups that helped build the bridge, I have to give credit to Heaven 17 for their help in the connection as well. I'm seriously convinced that a lot of their music, especially from the first two albums, had some success with this crossover. "Let Me Go" is the big hit, but there were a lot of songs that would have fitted in well with the Electro Funk that was going on.

As for Numan, "We Take Mystery to Bed" certainly would have fitted in very well.

I think some of the later era synthpop music sounds similar to electro-funk, but not most early synthpop. Synthpop did influence electro-funk, but I don't really care for the latter. I'd probably have to be more into Disco or hip-hop to appreciate it. It's nowhere near the Wave spectrum to me.

For the record, I heard a lot of Latin freestyle and 80s electro-hip hop as a child, as my mother is Puerto Rican and lived in NYC, and this stuff was very popular. So sometimes the songs at least bring back memories. [:)]
