Just a quip to suggest that going for the security blanket of familiarity versus holding to absolute statements based on what you've read and hold to be fact might be two sides of the same coin.

Also, to be clear, none of my statements regard your song selections. If people think otherwise, they've missed my point. Your taste is pretty damned eclectic, while I've always held mine to be influenced mostly by radio from back in the day. My original statement was simple - a tame generalization of two perceived tendencies I see (in myself as well):

"It might indeed be somewhat revisionist to pump up certain bands into legend. I think it can also be equally revisionist to slam those contributions, especially in the context of their times."

I'll be skeptical of extremes in both directions. That's it, a simple opinion.

This is a tangential point, but I think most people, if they are honest, want some kind of validation from fellow enthusiasts. It might be the validation of being one of the illuminati ("Oh, you haven't heard X? Let me educate you, poor thing") or the validation of being mainstream ("Like the others, I choose X, now applaud me"). Very human. That need for validation only becomes a problem when it stops them from enjoying something they actually enjoy. I remember back in the mid 90s a neighbor admitted she was afraid to buy REM at the record store because she knew the cool kid employees, who were also in her social set, would scoff at her.

In the interest of full disclosure, I like "Doot Doot, "Come On Eilieen," "Hong Kong Garden" and a slew of other songs that have been derided in these forums. Nice thing about being 44--I don't give a shit.

One last point about the top 50 favorites list. Favorites aren't arguable. If vanilla is someone's favorite, then nobody can argue that this person's favorite is actually chocolate. If someone argues that vanilla is the *best* flavor (regardless of whether it is a favorite at the time), then this claim is arguable.

Anyway, I'm having fun with these lists, and learning from them. Think I'll dump all the songs in a Grooveshark playlist and put on shuffle.

Since the coin is music and no matter whether it falls heads or tails, at the end of the day we all win.

I never thought any of your comments were about my song selection and although I have given mainstream 80s a damn good go in the past most of it just doesn't do anything for me.

Can certainly see the merit of your statement of being sceptical of extremes at both directions and to concentrate purely on one or another is certainly a bad thing, there's nothing wrong with taking something from both to give yourself a well-rounded view.
