Did you ever get tired of the new wave genre?

hmmm, to tell you guys the truth?

no, even during the mid to late 90's when new wave was becoming a fad once again here in the philippines, when it was going back to mainstream popularity, i never did get tired of it...

moreover, i just shifted and tried to explore new bands during the 80's that i've never heard of... its embarrassing to say, i've only heard of the care in 1993, my flaming sword being played at our local radio station NU 107...

its 2008, and i'm glad i'm still discovering bands i've never heard of that had been around back in the day...

i simply won't get tired of it...

by the end of the 80s, 'new wave' song had been so oversaturated from not only my own overplaying of them, but by hearing them in clubs constantly that I totally stopped listening to new wave in the 90s and drowned myself in the underground techno/rave/deep house/hard house club scene in New York City. It was the best thing I ever did, because coming back to the stuff 20 years later was so refreshing and revitalized my love of the genre and sent me searching for all new artists that sounded like 80s new wave as well as the plethora of obscure 80s new wave stuff I missed the first time.

Yes. There was probably a 10 year period in the late 80's to late 90's that I never looked back. I still collected CD's of my favorites but didn't really listen to new wave.

Quite frankly I've never felt a shortage of great music between then and now and have always found stuff to enjoy. I never really wanted to be one of "those" that were stuck in a musical period. Like this hippie guy I knew in the 80's who would only listen to 60's music and always complained how new music sucked.

As I've become older I've been very nostalgic about 80's New Wave and it represents about 25% of what I have on my iPod.

I'm like you, SwampThing. Music has always been a natural progression for me, a pretty seamless segue from genres that crossover and blend together--after all, label it however you want, it's all pop music. I don't get it when I see people on the boards griping about how bad music is today. It makes me think they're just not looking in the right places--there are tons of songs and artists I love releasing music all the time, both mainstream and more undeground--or they just don't want to find it. And when they flip out over 80s tracks being covered by new artists or sampled, I'm shocked--I LOVE to see these songs creeping back for more with a fresh feel.

About a year ago, some friends convinced my partner and I to go to a 'retro' new wave club near our house--we had a great time in a nostalgic way, but the SCARY thing was, tons of people we used to see at the clubs in the 80s were there, dressed EXACTLY the same as they were in the 80s, and dancing the same exact way to the same exact songs! We danced to Erasure, Berlin, and stuff like that and had a good retro time, but then a Sisters of Mercy song came on that I used to dance to all the time, and I looked at an old friend who was there that night, and said to her, "I can't dance to this. I just don't have that kind of dark anger in me anymore!"

[/quote]I wholeheartedly concur.. However, I've been continually discovering 'fresh' listening material from that bygone era as well as the current one given all the musical leads/links, etc. I have acquired from this site.

I never got tired of it. I listened to some records too many times but after 25 years, I hear them with new ears. Tonight I listened to A Flock of Seagulls' "Listen" from start to finish and enjoyed it through and through. I wore out two cassettes of that album in '83; finally, I had to take a break from it!

What happened was styles changed in the late '80s and I was not interested in "grunge" or "the Manchester sound," so I started in on electronica and contemporary classical music.

New Wave has its revival in so-called "Casio pop" and "electroclash," and I like what I hear--but I'm busy listening to other things.

No I do not. I love listening to old favorites, and discovering undiscovered 80s gems all the time. I love how a lot of it sounds totally fresh, even after all these years. Now that I can listen to it more objectively, I also enjoy being able to discern the more technical aspects of it, too--certain guitar or synth sounds, bass hooks, drum fills, etc. Stuff that makes it sound fresh all over again. Love it always !
