Tape Delay is decent too; less a work of non-fiction than a collection of interviews. Also mainly UK-slanted (eg the Fall, Soft Cell, Stevo) but some others too such as Sonic Youth and Einsturzende Neubauten.

cool, have three books to check out now. i'm just surprised there are not more books out there. you guys ever read 'this band could be your life', with one chapter devoted to an indie band such as husker du, replacements, dinosaur jr, fugazi? it's great. that's what i want for new wave.

Yes ... love that book. I could do without the Beat Happening section but the rest of it is pretty amazing.
Rewind - I haven't dug them out in quite some time, but I remember loving those Rock Yearbooks. The one-liner reviews were hilarious and the quote section and worst album cover section were always entertaining.

Yes ... love that book. I could do without the Beat Happening section but the rest of it is pretty amazing.

funny, that was my only quibble with the book too. I never listened to Beat Happening, nor had any of my friends. Who would you have included instead? For me the serious omission was Meat Puppets!

Melvins or Scratch Acid but Meat Puppets is also a solid choice.

Pitchfork just published its list of top 60 music books:

It includes a few books that are a least tangential to NW: "Rip It Up", "This Band", a book on krautrock, a book on the smiths, "The Voice of New Music: New York City 1972-1982" (oh yeah, gotta check that one out), "Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk", and "The SPIN Alternative Record Guide" ('95).
p.s. Don't know Scratch but I love the melvins

It's David Yow's band before he found fame and fortune with The Jesus Lizard so your appreciation of them will depend upon your tolerance level for Yow's "singing". Check out the cd "The Greatest Gift" ... it's basically everything they ever did on one disc.

You seem to have great taste so you'd probably like them. It's David Yow's band before he found fame and fortune with The Jesus Lizard so your appreciation of them will depend upon your tolerance level for Yow's "singing". Check out the cd "The Greatest Gift" ... it's basically everything they ever did on one disc.
