REM truly was one of my favorites by the mid to late 1980’s, and their albums spent a lot of time on my turntable. Maybe it was more of a guilty pleasure, as their music was very much unlike everything else I listened to. But my nostalgia for them has waned in direct proportion to their rise in irrelevance over the past 15 years or so.

Perhaps my feelings today would have been different if they had the good sense to call it a day when Bill Berry retired.

REM was likely fortunate to have gathered enough currency in the biz to be able to continue to create music they wanted to make, fans and industry be damned. What artist wouldn’t want that?

It is unfortunate, however, that the results were so utterly boring.

I don't know. They didn't produce any classics after Bill Berry left but there were at least a few good songs on every later album (well...maybe not on Around The Sun). I know that the last two records were acclaimed as a return to their former IRS glory days but to me they sounded more like a band who had just run out of ideas and were imitating their younger selves. U2 have managed to spin that tired routine into gold but it never really worked for R.E.M. and they just vanished off the musical landscape.

The best recent R.E.M. release was their "Live at Olympia" CD set where they did most of, if not all of, the Chronic Town EP, Murmur and Reckoning.

Funny thing is, the only time it gets soft is when I think of either Tannoyah's face or her music. Either one has the same effect. And there ain't enough Viagra in all of Pfizer to change that.

As for R.E.M., kudos to them for making songs people actually remember.

Let's be honest, how many of our favs from the 80's put out anything *great* after their first 4-6 albums. This list includes REM, U2, New Order, Depeche Mode, Cure, Echo & the Bunymen. Sure they put out a good song once and a while but nothing worth listening to from start to finish.

* Oh, and the Smiths had the decency to call it quits before this happened to them!

The difference may be the pretension factor. The last whatever number of REM albums have been preceded by reams of press heralding their RETURN TO FORM!!!11 and/or rejuvenanted "new" approach and avant garde stylings. Those other bands just release filler, often in conjunction with tours, and don't make such a big deal out of it. In addition, the last whatever number of REM albums have been utter shite from start to finish.

They got complacent, lazy and the only thing new and interesting about them was their press release for each new CD and even that became boring after a while.
