I doubt it'll be anytime soon. They're breaking up at the age most 80's bands are getting back together. The Greatest Hits is a contract filler for Warner Bros. The label had no interest in another REM album of original material.

If REM doesn't belong in New Wave, then neither do the Smiths. Manchester, England or Athens, GA be damned, how can anyone on these boards deny this. I respect Frau's opinion but he is wrong. A bands commercial success shouldn't be the reason they aren't New Wave. I tire of all this "they were just a college band" stamp that those with their own agendas constantly proclaim. If you were to purchase their releases as they came out and heard them develop into a the great band they were, you would understand. I am talking about their releases for IRS. I understand how djcraig feels holding that 7 inch vinyl record. What I don't understand is the hate and or jealousy certain forum members have towards bands they don't like or understand. In the past I have made negative comments about u2 but I never attacked or took a personal attack on any NWOMB member with the exception of toya which goes without saying. Just be content you won't have REM to kick around anymore. Let those who enjoyed their music have their say. Barmy, I care. I even care.

I used to get a kick whenever I heard a New Wave Band like the Smiths or XTC on the radio. Now I hear them in the grocery store and in restaurants.

Bravo.

I have stated repeatedly that definitions of "new wave" and all it's sub-genres are somewhat subjective. So far, no one has been able to provide an adequate definition of what is and isn't in this category or that.

I don't even listen to R.E.M. much anymore but I do get nostalgic for that time when all these exciting new sounds were coming out of my radio. R.E.M. was one of them.

As for Frau, he thinks that drinking a bottle of Thunderbird out of a paper bag while watching Cagney and Lacey reruns qualifies as a cultural experience.

Wow, remember when REM were so fresh and exciting, coming out of college radio, and only a FEW people had ever heard of them ? I was a big fan back then ! [i]Chronic Town, Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction[/i]... now that was fresh stuff ! I was always more into the synthy side of new wave/"alternative", but these guys opened my mind towards a more strummy-guitar side of things. Loved them so much. I lost track of them in the 90s, and what I did hear on the radio from them then didn't really grab me...but come on, these guys were awesome when they came crashing out of the gate.

REM simply makes me sad. What a phenomenal start only to end up a parody of the bloated 70's bands they were trying to NOT sound like! Sure there may have been songs but everything about them in the last 10-15 (20?) years has been very difficult to take. Even their album art was phoned in.
