Anyone want to mention any artists that changed style suddenly. I don't mean evolved their style over time, but made a sudden change.

I have three:

1. Bananarama was New Wave, then had a big hit with Venus, and went totally dance in their next album.

2. Billy Ocean. Not New Wave, but went totally ballads after his first album because his record company wanted him to. He said it was fine with him as long as the $$$ was coming in. (I wish he stuck to ballads permanently instead of making that horrid "Get out of my dreams, get into my car" dance attrocity.)

3. Simple Minds. They were hired to do "Don't You (Forget about me)" which was so successful they decided to go more poppish.

Any others?

Not Necessarily New Wave, but Neil Young has made many a change. Rock, Folk, country, blues, etc.

Sting--He was cool with The Police especially in thier first 3 or 4 LPs then things slowy began to go south. Now look at him he is just a sad mega pop star that no one who has cool tastes can like.

Suburban Lawns totally changed on their 2nd album. from quirky to, um, Golden Palominos like. And i like both.

dont know if anyone cares but i loved men without hats, they did the folk of the 80's ep. then
rythm of youth. then
folk of the 80's part 3.
all with this wailing yelping dramatic singing.

then they come out with pop goes the world and the whole

I think the change from joy division to new order was a massive change.
Although tracks like isolation began to have a "dance " feel they were nothing like the full on electro dance of something like Everythings gone green.

I think ABC shocked a lot of people going from a pop, dance style on "The Lexicon of Love" to a more heavy, guitar, rock style on "Beauty Stab"; and then they went back to the dance style with "How to Be A Zillionaire".

The Soup Dragons... bubblegummy punk-pop on their first two albums, then suddenly turned toward the Manchestery acid house-rock stuff thereafter.
I kinda liked both incarnations.

Depeche Mode-
