Marianne Faithfull

Was wondering if anyone else was a fan of of Marianne Faithfull. I grew up listening to my parents records of Marianne Faithfull' s folk-pop 1960's music and I have been a lifelong fan. I later became incredibly impressed when she shed her hippie persona (and her pretty soprano voice) and began dabbling in more alternative means of expression: New Wave synths, Brecht & Well interpretations, drug-addled lounge-singer, dirge, Tom Waits and Patti Smith covers, etc.

I recently began listening to her late seventies and eighties albums again and have to say that unlike many of her 1960's peers who are still humping along on the oldies circuit, this woman has an extraodinary ability to deviate off course into some really fascinating terrain. My three favorite albums are 1979's "Broken English", 1981's "Dangerous Acquaintances", and 1987's "Strange Weather" where she does a brilliant remake of her 1964 classic "As Tears Go By."

I was curious to know if anyone else was a fan or had any thoughts on her or her music from a new-wave/alternative perspective? And as a comparison, can you think of any other older musicians/singers that have drastically altered their original style and forged into such different genres?

I remember hearing her cover of Working Class Hero and being very impressed.

Ex-Rat, I have this CD of hers, a greatest hits compilation and most stuff is from the 1960s. Then you get to the end and there's "Sister Morphine"! What a contrast!
