A thread in the "Where Are They Now?" forum inspired me here.

Madness. Talk about a one of the all-time greatest bands (of any genre) to come out of Great Britain. It's too bad that they never realized their full potential in the states, and in many ways I feel cheated by that. I missed out on the radio play and tours. I think that they are taken for granted most of the time, being left out of discussions, and left off favorite lists and compilations. Madness was one of the few consistently good bands of the early eighties. I even enjoyed their 1999 album "Wonderful". When I look back at their string of albums and resulting singles, I cannot find a stinker. I wouldn't name myself a fan of ska in general, but Madness are so good they can't be denied. Image became so important back then and I think Suggs and the rest of the gang nailed it. They were slick, witty, and fun - which came through in their music and videos, and made them appealing to the young and old. Love these guys!

Hard to believe they're considered one hit wonders in the States. They had a couple dozen hits overseas but the only one that the casual listener knows about here is Our House. Can anybody picture One Step Beyond being played on a Top-40 station circa 1

I agree, they were a great band. I think they were too British for American tastes during that time. A real shame that radio was too busy playing Journey to give Madness a shot.

Truly incredible band from the 2 Tone story to their unheralded hits back in the 80's to early 90's,they should have been Big!how about even touring with Morrissey back in the early 90's with the Union Jack higly raised...
