late to the party

Hi everyone!!!!! Like "o my god" I just found you. I have been surfin this site and the memories just flow from my mouth.
First I want to say hello to all here. I lived in NYC from 81-91. I was a great time in my life.I was going to F.I.T. on 27th st and I lived around the corner on 26th between 6th and 7th ave. It was a dump, small one bedroom (but that was on a good day) and I lived with 2 roommates as well as we could barely make the 700.00 a month rent.
The music made during the 80`s is still my favorite music. I was into the indie scene like a mad man. Anything on the 4ad label\ Beggers Banquet stuff. This Mortal Coil,Cocteau Twins, Xymox, all the bands on the label. They were doing great music,plus the album art was fantastic.I remember all the 12 inches,reading the linner notes,learning about other band on the label.
I also listen to Sisters of Mercy, The Chameleons, Lowlife, Krafterk, OMD(before that horrible 'If you leave") 23 skidoo, Ub40(early stuff,their dub 12 inches) The Smiths,The Beat, Specials, Nina Hagen, The cure, TheThe, Killing Joke, Creation label stuff too, like Felt,House of Love, Jesus and Mary Chain,Biff Bang Pow, Primal Scream. I had Cherry Red label stuff as well.
MY favorite record store was St.Marks Sounds. I would spend hours going through all the albums, 12 inches, for days (remember the 12 inch was born in the 80`s.
I remember the store slowly to carry cds. I bought a Rough Trade cd (my first). It was a comp that had a Smiths song "Please Please Let me get what I want" and a Wire track,Robert Watt, and othe stuff but I cant remember the name of it.
As for clubs the club for me was Danceateria. I live there from 84-86. Sunday -Tuesday it was 3 bucks to get in.I would dance to "Slang Teacher by Wide Boy Awake!!!!!!! I got in free mostly anyway. The Bill Cango floor (the top floor had all the privite parties were I chatted with The Police Richard Hell,Jim Fetus and many more I cant remember. I saw great bands play; The cure,Bauhaus,The Chameleons,Cocteau Twins, and Madonna(before she was madonna)
The only radio station for me was WLIR thru WDRE. The shreek and screamer of the week was always in converstion.I lived for that shit. The signal was hard to pick up in the city, so I listen to college radio like WNYU and a South Orange College station as well.(cant remember the name).
I moved to Hoboken and found Pier Platters as a good stop to hunt for albums before going to the city. I moved around alot in those years and lost most of my record collection But now thanks to P2P`s & mp3 I have my 40 gig ipod full of all my favorite music that is still what I listen too (well Im into Downbeat stuff now)
Well I think I bored you enough with my trip and stumble through the 80`s
I am a freak when It comes to music,Im very passionate about it.I can remeber when and where I first heard a song,what I was doin,who I was with.
I remember boom boxes playing the radio station (KTU) in 85 Thomas Dolby "She blinded me with science" that song was huge,there had to be 100 different mixes of that song up and down the streets.NYC Eletro was making it big.
Oh and a MTV memory: I went to visit a girlfriend on Long Island and they had cable tv.It was the weekend they launch MTV. I think we were up for 24 hrs watching it.
Ok enuff...oH wait does anyone know if "ugh a music war" is going to be release on DVD? If you never seen it go and try to find the VHS of the movie. Fab bands on it, killer concert footage.Its a must for any 80`s fan

Welcome and thanks for the great read. WLIR was the greatest in the 80's. I miss it like crazy. But thanks to all the great people here on this site, you can pretty much find any song or information you need.[:D]
