Very cool to see that you stream. I've wondered if there were college stations that did/do that. The college stations in my area Baltimore, Wash D.C. are totally lame. They were "smokin'" in the late 70's, early 80's. Sad how that changed.

Is that in two weeks because of the 1980 hour? We're playing nothing but songs from 1980 from midnight to 1am EST. We pick a year and do that the last Saturday of every month (1981 in April, etc).
Yeah, our station streaming helped us pick up a lot of listeners disatisfied with local radio. To be honest though, NYC radio has been a cesspool of brainless Hip Hop and warmed over Metal riffs since WLIR went off. It's basically the handful of college radio stations here that keep all of us sane.

This is exactly the kind of thing I wanna revamp at the university radio station, but there are too many roadblocks to get it launched. First off, we're only broadcasting via shoutcast (no antenna!), their collection is miniscule, almost no CDs, and everything is indie rock driven. I'd gladly bring my stuff in, but most of it is packed in storage. I only have about 300 CDs with me [xx(] I suppose this is the only way to plug a show that's broadcasted over the internet...

Btw, I have a question, how do you guys get the music? Is it on your radio library or do you have a place where you can dl the mp3s and go that way? Maybe I'm going about this the wrong way if there is an easier way to obtain the tuneage for a show. I'm a beginner at this, but would love to introduce it to the kids here at school [:)]

WFDU has a long history with labels and promoters and at this point they automatically just send us everything (except for Rhino...Why Rhino? WHY?) and this is mainly because we report to CMJ every week. As for the older stuff (the 70's/80's Punk/New Wave) that's all in our record/CD library having been collected over the years via that process.
Now if you're interested in getting more new stuff, as far as I know, CMJ does'nt look at webcasting but I have to believe that this policy will change (if it has'nt already)considering there's so much internet streaming now.
There's another chart, The College Air Newsletter. I'm not sure how they go about tabulating stuff.
Labels can be pretty free with their music though since airplay generates sales (theoretically anyway) so I would just start hitting them up anyway, especially for reissues, or ideally have your music director start doing it.
...but I know we've got some label reps here on the board too.[:)]

Well, the history of our radio station is pretty shaky. Right now, it's completely in shambles and I'm trying to figure out any ideas on how to get it running (I'm talkin about the college station at UCSD here in Califonia, btw). Somehow, everything that could go wrong with it HAS gone wrong, and now it resembles like the Mir space station in that it still gets some funding, it still runs (sort of), but, to everyone's minds, it's been forgotten that it even exists! Most kids here use the excuse that it is because we're not on the real airwaves with our own antenna. If you know the tricky situation about broadcasting here in SoCal you'll soon realise how much it sucks to be in San Diego and wanting to start up something like a radio station when everyone's antennas are beaming from Mexico to break FCC rules. That's besides all the other problems that beset the place - such as getting actual music, people who know about music to play it, and a steady audience. As I speak, the place serves mainly as a hangout for kids and their poseur friends... but a thought crossed my mind this morning, "How much does it cost to put up an antenna like Clearchannel or Infinity have in Mexico? Or is there a way to get a sponsor, sell out, but get what we need in the process?"

Hey, anyone else from SoCal? Arrow 93.1 has turned into an iPod! Hahaha. That is the funniest thing I heard on the radio this morning when I was in Orange County, how it is one enormous continuous shuffle. That station is probably the size of Big Blue and will be on permanent shuffle without the need of anyone to be at the station. In a way, it's great. I can't stand most "dj"s and the crap Arrow was playing could drive anyone into an padded cell after about a day and half of "Stairway To Heaven" in a seemingly vicious loop. iPods are better at running a radio station here than people! [:D]

Those are some pretty good playlists. You've also picked some of the better "new" new wave bands like The Apples In Stereo. Have you tried Guided By Voices or The Zutons?

Yeah, we've been playing Guided By Voices for years and last year I interviewed The Zutons (and then of course they sold "Pressure Point" to Levis and they're all millionaires now...just kidding)

Thanks and yeah the last Saturday of the month we always pick a year and have listeners send in their requests for that 60 minute block. It's 1981 this month.
...and XXX, too bad about your college station. We've got problems too. We're only allowed to play the dreaded "Rock" music on Saturday nights.

Yeah, "You Broke My Heart In 17 Places" and that track (I think) is on it. I took it off the Stiff Records Boxed Set.

We ran out of time in the 2nd hour and I could'nt get to Icehouse and Split Enz. I'll have 'em coming up on a future show.
