I agree. But I also think that it truly peaked in 1983. During 1983, the so-called "Second British Invasion" took place which brought a lot of the new wave artists to he American Top 40. Acts such as Naked Eyes, Kajagoogoo, Adam Ant, etc. finaly cracked the US market after receiving airplay on "new wave" stations for a while back. I think new wave started to fade around 1984. But I agree with the original post that 1979 - 1982 was the heyday of new wave.

81-83, because I was out of high school and having a good time. High school was all Molly Hatchett, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Pink Floyd, all of which I like, but all of which got played to death.

Though I also loved the music of 79. By 83 we were starting to see the wannabes and copycats kicking in.

Not really. I'm 36 going on 37. While there was a ton of solid material from the early days of New Wave, the bulk of irritating cheese (i.e. the Little Girls, Lene Lovich) also originated from that period. To me, it depends on where you were growing up. I see some people selecting the early '80s because of New Wave's popularity on MTV's first years although let's not forget Top-40 was hideously bad at the time. I don't think New Wave was as popular in America as people want to remember. There was tremendous indifference to the genre. Unless you were living within range of WLIR, CFNY, or KROQ, radio must've been torture. If New Wave was so popular, how come there were only a handful of Rock of the '80s stations? The Police, Duran Duran, and Tears for Fears had their huge crossover hits but they didn't dominate the decade as much as Michael Jackson, Madonna, and pop-metal did.

For fans like me who lived in Manila, Philippines in the mid-to-late '80s, it was the heyday of New Wave with artists such as the Railway Children, Care, Friends Again, Xmal Deutschland, Wire Train, Orange Juice, the Colourfield, Olympic Smile, Seona Dancing, etc., booming from three different FM New Wave stations.

Most of my all-time favorite New Wave records - discs from the Wild Swans, the Colourfield, the Railway Children, the Chameleons, the Go-Betweens, the Adventures, the Bolshoi, among others - are from the late '80s. I've always preferred the more serious, guitar-based side of New Wave.

Not to nitpick Martini, but Adam & the Ants' music was released (and played on some stations) in the '79 - '81 timeframe (Dirk Wears White Sox in '79, Kings of the Wild Frontier in '80 and Prince Charming in '81)... which is another reason my vote is '79 - '81

If we can't say 79 to 82 (as I was originally going to post), I'll begin in the middle of '79 and end in the middle of 82, which allows me to fit those years into the 'accepted' 3 year formula.

May 1979-May 1980(1 year)
June 1980-June 1981 (1 year)
July 1981-July 1982 (1 year)
