The band Quincy

In the obscure 80's archive of music it nanes a band named Quincy. Does anyone know if there from Quincy,MA . I lived there for many years and never heard of them .

The band Quincy was from Southern New Jersey, I believe Haddon Heights. They are not from Mass. I used to watch them play locally when I was in college.

They were forced to change their name after some protest from Quincy Jones.

I believe they became Lu Lu Temple. Some band members went on to form Smash Palace and Smash Palace may exist in some capacity.

If that's the case, I bet Mr. Jones shit himself when the T.V. show came out. What arrogance.

Quincy's album is pretty good. And Smash Palace's first album is great. Lulu Temple's EP is gar-bage. With a capital G. They made a video for one of the tracks ("Don't Say No"), and it was so bad, it made the music look good in comparison. I swear they had something like seven saxophonists and five women in the video, all serving seemingly no purpose whatsoever. Never mind the $2.99 budget.

IIRC, the common bond among all three was Stephen Butler. His brother, Brian, was in Quincy and Smash Palace, but wisely opted out of the crap in the creme cookie. As for Quincy, they sounded a little bit like Elvis Costello. And as for Smash Palace, they gave the world one classic single...

Think Byrds, Kinks, Badfinger, Fastball, Cheap Trick, Fountains of Wayne . Simply put, for those of us who still get taken in by an infectious chorus and great songwriting craft, this band has a genuine singular sound with nearly effortlessly tuneful songs. This is modern music inspired by echoes of the past.

Their musical odyssey began when the Butler brothers dropped out of college when their first band, “Quincy” was discovered by Hilly Kristal, owner of CBGB's, Paul Atkinson of the Zombies signed the band to a major label deal only to be sued by Quincy Jones for stealing “his” name when he saw the bands name on the marquee at, “The Whiskey,” in LA.

Stephen and Brian then formed, “ Smash Palace ,” and signed with Epic Records. After two years of national touring, music industry intrigues, the Butlers took up a staff song writing position at BMG publishing and put the band on hold. As Stephen Butler puts it, “What can I say? We were seduced by the money.” Liking to write for themselves a whole lot more than writing for other people, “ Smash Palace ,” regrouped. “Over The Top,” is the band's third release in the past five years.

“Another Man,” from their “Fast, Long, Loud,” CD release scored a top 100 rock radio track, added to over a hundred radio stations while “Give You My Word,” from “Unlocked,” was the featured track in the independent film, “Who's Kyle?” starring Gary Oldman.

Stephen Butler has also just completed work on the new Mary Lee's Corvette record. He is the producer, co-writer and multi-instrumentalist on the CD which will be released later this year.

Smash Palace will be in England during the month of May 2005 supporting the new CD with a summer US tour in the planning. Band members are, Stephen Butler, lead vocals, lead guitar, DyAnne DiSalvo, rhythm guitar and vocals, Philip Rizzo, bass and Greg Donato, drums.
