rather catchy synth toon from Cat Stevens!

Never would have thought Cat Stevens would have released <a href="http://www.sendspace.com/file/rg56wb" target="_blank">this</a> quirky number, its kind of an oddity. Here is what discomuseum.com had to say about it...

[i]A string of pop successes during the early to mid-1970's made Cat one of the important singer/songwriters of the genre. On December 23, 1977, Stevens formally became a Muslim and adopted the name Yusuf Islam. The following year he released the very rare 12" single "Was Dog A Doughnut." The early morning classic was/is a favorite among not only the late-nighters, but the black and gay dancers as well. It would be his last pop release.[/i]

Sounds like Cat had a chance collaboration with Thomas Dolby, Ian Dury or Chaz Jankel!

Pretty amazing to hear something that sounds so far removed from what we're accustomed to hearing by a particular artist.

Reminds me of what Neil Young did on his 'Trans' album lol [:D]

Wow, that IS bizarre yet quite listenable. Thanks Patrick! I suppose that because it's an instrumental, formerly-known-as-Cat-Stevens was able to get away with this. Synthesizers and Cat Stevens ... who knew?[:0]

I have always admired this track and basically Cat Stevens has never released anything like this again. It is off the IsItsO album.

Glad you peeps like it. The first time I heard this I was really quite shocked. It sounds like a dub of a Human League song, it has the same drum sounds from a HL track.

All of this material from the same year doesn't sound like this at all, although it incorporates synths. First of all this is programmed music, and as a noodler with the synth, I would have to say this is pretty sophisticated programming for the time - christ it was 1978.

This song has always fascinated me, it raises so many (unanswered) questions, such as what the !@#$ does the title mean? Musically it is fun and very danceable, and you can tell that it is basically a variation on a basic latin/samba riff which you hear later on in the song (4 minutes into the song). I haven't decided if I like or hate the guitar in the song. The guitar is the only thing that dates it as a 70s toon, lending a disco flavor to the song, otherwise, it could easily pass as an 80s one.

It raises questions about Cat, like why did he release this, it is obviously quite different from the rest of his work of that time. I am sure there is some either wild or really lame story explaining it all... I would love to hear it none the less.

My MP3 is better than the one from the Bubble Gum Machine, I wouldn't want to dissapoint you NWOers [;)], mine is at a higher bit rate, better volume, bassier and at the right speed.

I will post more stuff. I have been meaning too, but was thwarted by the gawdawfullness of yousendit... cheers![:D]
