Music Labels Fined for Bribing Radio

This is one of those "be careful what you wish for" situations,
cutting off the payola = tighter playlists[:(] and regular radio continues to deteriorate. What exactly is the benefit of eliminating payola?

I think the hope is that radio goes back to a model where the DJ picks out songs that he likes or that he thinks will be hits - in essence, the radio station having a more prominent influence in the shaping of public opinion rather than the music labels which are obviously partial to their own product. Personally, I'd rather see artists played more on the radio that are requested by listeners and favored by DJs rather than ones that are simply sold with heavier bribes than others. I know that if I were an artist I'd be pissed if I found out my record was'nt getting enough airplay because my label did'nt bribe the stations enough. Even if my label did grant the largest payola, how would I ever really know that my music was superior without my competition being given a fair enough chance?
