Artists that started as copycats...

...but matured and developed their own style. Who do you think pulled this trick off?

Non-new wave: definitely Rush. On their first album Geddy Lee was trying way to hard to sound like Robert Plant. One album later, they started to kick ass with the addition of Neal Peart.

New Wave: The Twins (started off as a Gary Numan sounding duo, later had some great lil' tunes that were all their own.

Actually, Japan started out as a New York Dolls influenced band........kind of....

Then Duran copied their later look.....

<p align="justify">I see them as more influenced by David Bowie and Roxy Music, although the first album was all over the place so that one could've been NY Dolls influenced. And blasphemy to say Japan copied D2 when it's the other way around. Speaking of Japan's first album, anyone notice how their look somewhat reflects that of Guns 'N Roses ten years later?[8D]

Bowie himself wanted to be Bob Dylan so badly... alot of people did back then.

Just listen to the Hunky Dory album. You can hear Bowie morphing from the next folk wannabe to pre- Ziggy space cadet rock alien.

I saw the Tea Party at a Bar in Toronto before they got popular, they were opening for a Pink Floyd cover band at the time. They themselves were basically a Doors cover band, with some original material thrown in.

The Bolsheviks started out covering punk, Oi!, power pop, new wave, and mod bands: The Who, et al. and later recorded original songs... if anyone from LA remembers them...
