The horror of war and children

I haven't mentioned this before, at least I don't remember doing it, but I happen to live a couple doors down from an amazing kid named Saleh. Here is a link to his story:

His life is a testament to both the horror of how war affects the innocent as well as the human spirit. Seeing him riding down the street on his bike, having him ask me to help him climb our neighbors' trees and steal the fruit, or just talking with him. It is very difficult to ever feel sorry for myself when I see what he's been through and how strong he is in dealing with his life. Yesterday, his favorite uncle came to visit and Saleh spontaneously ran out to see him. He had forgotten to put on a shirt and seeing his horribly ravaged body was overwhelming. I can't imagine what his family has gone through, yet he is simply one of thousands that have to deal with this failing of humanity that plagues the world. How the fuck do we fix the world?
