When I was a beginning reporter at a small daily newspaper, one of my responsibilities was to run down to the police station each morning and get the police report. Most of the time, it was stuff like speeding, domestic violence, theft, etc. Nothing terribly exciting, but stuff that people in a small town absolutely HAD to know. We'd list the charge and give a brief description of what happened. If we ever left the report out, we got all kinds of calls because people were just dying to know what their neighbors had been up to.
