What happened to Johnny hates Jazz?

Postby Danielwaver » Thu Oct 25, 2007 4:58 pm

While discussing 80's bands with friends, many of them ask of the fate of Johnny hates Jazz and if Turn Back The Clock LP was their last work. In fact it was but it was not the end for Johnny hates Jazz frontman, Clark Datchler. In the summer of 1988, Datchler left Johnny Hates Jazz to resume his solo career. Datchler's solo debut, Raindance, was released in 1990, sounding almost identical to his work with Johnny Hates Jazz. Datchler released another LP, Fishing for Souls, in 1992. You can download from below link his solo song, Broken Spirit which could have easily been a Johnny hates Jazz hit back then.

I heard that Johnny Hates Jazz have reunited. We've been playing Clark Datchler's new single on WXB 102. Love it!

Actually, Turn Back The Clock was NOT the only Johnny Hates Jazz album. In 1991, after Datchler left for a solo, the band put out another Virgin LP called Tall Stories. I have the CD and while it is not as closely pop as Turn Back The Clock, it's not a bad record. It has a very adult contemporary mood...Think Breathe--with a bit of Danny Wilson--and you've got what sound they were going after. Phil Thornally took on a much more active role in this version of the group, writing/co-writing all of the tracks, playing, and even getting credit as a member of the group. Tall Stories was proof that the Datchler was not solely responsible for a sound that apparently so many people were so fond of. Who knew?
