How do you deal with these people?

Numan Project's thread titled New Wave Massacre inspired me to post this.

Last night my husband and I went to a formal dinner dance for his work, and after dinner the DJ started playing music, trying to get these old farts onto the dancefloor. My husband works for a very conservative organization, and most of his coworkers are politically and socially very conservative, as well. So most of these events are usually as exciting as watching paint dry. First the DJ played the usual macarena, electric slide, and YMCA. Then he started taking requests.

I have to tell you a little about the wife of my husband's boss. She is in her late 30's, thin, pretty, popular, she throws fabulous parties, and she is the perfect mom and homemaker to her four kids. She is definitely the top dog among all of the wives--the lesser wives kiss her ass a lot, hoping to better their husband's careers. I like her enough, but I secretly envy her and despise her.

She also HATES new wave. Last night she requested that the DJ play a song by Foreigner. I hate Foreigner [xx(], and most other 70's arena rock. She and some guy were the only people who danced to it. Then a song by Talking Heads came on. She said, "Who played this crap! Why can't the DJ just stick to one type of music?" I replied, "I didn't request it, but I very well could have. I love Talking Heads. And I love new wave." She visibly shuddered, like she was going to vomit. I was SOOOO tempted to say how I hate Foreigner, but I held my tongue, because this woman is the wife of my husband's boss.

The same thing happened at the Christmas party. I played the most mainstream new wave that the DJ had (New Order, Billy Idol, The Cure), and again this woman said, "Who played this crap!"

How do you tell a person to go f*ck herself without getting your husband fired?

You cant from any perspective I can think of.I know and feel your pain having to deal with this womans' self righteous attitude.

Hey manekineko first of all people who try to be perfect in every way have A LOT to hide. It's a shame that she can't be more open - minded about music. You obviously are more mature then she is.

Well... why not take the high road and try passing along an anonymous NW sampler CDR to this musically challenged socialite?
Given your broad knowledge base of the NW genre, I'm sure you could select some more obscure & eclectic NW tracks that could unw

How many people were dancing to "this crap" compared to how many were dancing to the Foreigner? I guess your best approach is to politely say, "Different kinds of music appeals to different kinds of people."

Been in the same situation. In fact,I think every wedding I've been too in the past 20 years has been like what you describe. I accepted (beforehand) that I was going to be miserable ....so I played a kick-ass NW CD before we got there....suffe
