Soft Cell / Tainted Love

Postby MARV » Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:21 am

Interesting article I came across on one of the quintessential songs of the era.

I thought Tainted Love was original, and only the Where Did I Love Go part was the remake.

Ah, got it. One of those things I never really thought about:

"Tainted Love" is a song composed by Ed Cobb, formerly of The Four Preps. It was originally recorded in 1964 by Gloria Jones, and was re-recorded by Ruth Swann in 1975 in a version which influenced, more closely than the original, the 'feel' of the subsequent electro-pop chart-topping cover version which brought the track to the attention of a wider audience.

[that original print was too small for my old eyes [:I] ]

I never knew about the association of "Tainted Love" with HIV, but it does have another connection in my mind - with the 1982 Tylenol tampering cases:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1982_Chica ... ol_murders

I remember a friend of mine singing "Tainted Tylenol..." in a random, teenage dark humor sort of way at the time the Tylenol cases were all over the news and the song was all over the radio. Still, whenever I hear that song I think of Tylenol. Funny how this connection stays in my mind but half the time I can't remember where I put my car keys.

Got it in one. I hate when this songs goes on at 80s nights, it's right up there with 'Blue Monday'.

Let's put it this way...the bloody song has become a staple at karaoke night at my 70 year old Korean in-laws place. Trust me when I say you do NOT want to hear a 70 year old Korean woman singing this song.
