Berlin's Terri Nunn on WFDU fm this Saturday night

Tune in to (or stream) 89.1 WFDU fm in the NYC/NJ area this Saturday night as Terri Nunn joins me on That Modern Rock Show. The show starts at 9pm eastern and Terri will be on at 10pm eastern. In addition we'll have new music from The Cure and The Alarm and loads of classic tracks from the likes of B52's,XTC,Stone Roses,Joe Jackson,etc.

Ya know, in the late 90s and early 00s, when I was still living in the best city in the world, I scanned through the area college stations for alternative and underground music. In the 80s, FDU, BAU, FUV, etc., had some great new wave/alt lineups. But towards the mid/late 90s, I noticed that these shows seem to have disappeared. I heard a lot of jazz, some talk shows, some 30s swing, but no Skinny Puppy or Sisters of Mercy or Fixx.

Is this something new that FDU has started again? If so, how long has this been going on? And can someone in Los Angeles listen in?

WLIRRIP, Yeah we were the victims of the "Alterna-boom" of the mid-90's when every commercial station in the area jumped on the bandwagon. Believe it or not there was once a time when Echo And The Bunnymen would get airplay on Z100! Some of our listeners drifted to these other commercial stations and since we're listener supported that hurt us during the fund drives. As a result, other genres of music that were not as well represented up the dial gained more of a foothold. Naturally the Alternative formats at these commercial stations were short-lived and gradually over time these listeners drifted back to us and we were able to stake our claim once again. In 2004 I made a decision to start bringing in my New Wave albums and mixing those in with the current releases. That turned out to be a good thing in the long run. When WLIR finally went off the air we picked up a lot of those 'LIR listeners in the Northern New Jersey/NYC area. Since then I've tried to focus on getting guests such as Terri Nunn, Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17, Comateens, Paul Robb from Information Society, etc. I figured since we're playing all this stuff anyway it might help our authenticty to actually get these musicians on the air to talk about these records.
Right now we still only do this one night a week (Saturday) but the possibility for expansion is always there if we continually pull our weight in the fundraiser. You can listen live from the website so please do check it out.
