yep, me too- it's "every bit as good", but in a different way. a little too "produced" in spots, but really a great album.

Oh, I actually liked Fuel For The Fire. I thought that "What In The Name Of Love" and "Scarifice" were great songs.

Leif Garrett's first release was a new wave classic, but by his second release, he was more closer to heavy metal. I was highly disappointed by this release. He should have stuck to his minimialisy Joy Division sound of his first LP.

I have to agree with Spaz and the others-"Fuel For The Fire" is excellent. It just did not receive the attention it deserved. "Flying Solo" and "No Flowers Please" are excellent tunes. I think the album showcased more of the duos songwriting skills rather than danceable music.

Blir, please revisit Echo's "Heaven up Here" - - the songs are admittedly less direct than the awesome Crocodiles but it has real depth - - not a disappointment.

Although certain songs have grown on me over the years (like the Beat's "The Limits we Set" off W'happen), none of the sophomore lps by my fave 2-tone artists (Specials, Beat, Selector, Madness) were as exciting to me as their respective debuts.

Although Shriekback's second LP, Jam Science, was quite good, their debut, Care, was infinitely better. The first album stressed strong basslines and abstract funk, while the second added "more layers of rhythm, melody, and noise to their established sound."

Not new wave, but Interpol's second album, Antics was VERY poor compared to their debut, Turn on the Bright Lights. Their first album was one of the best I've heard in years, full of mellow, soothing indie rock. The next album was more mainstream, even getting MTV airplay. They wrote songs that would be catchy, so people would buy their album. I suppose with such an utterly astounding debut album, it would be near impossible to match their original sound. I just wish they hadn't changed styles completely.

What I'm getting from this is what Spaz touched on earlier.......I think a lot has to do with our expectations. Not all...just a lot.

In my case (old school), 2 perfect examples have been given & Blir hit them right on the nose:

Blir:
1)THE CLASH: Give Them Enough Rope didn't cut it for me, but I'll consider it a breather before London Calling.

2)THE JAM: This is the Modern World, some decent songs, not the energy you would've expected, but sandwiched between In the City and All Mod Cons, who can really criticize?


Bingo, Blir! Funny thing is...as much as I hated them, then...I can listen to them both all day, now! But they do take a back seat to the 1st & 3rd albums from both of these groups.

Hppd Topic, those as mamy have pointed out several albums just need time to grow on you. I love Beuty Stab, although it's not my favorite ABC album some og Maritn's best writing is on that LP (e.g United Kingdom)
Sa,e with Fuel for the FIre as toher have mentioned.

I guess some albums I was not as impressed with:
1. INXS--Kick. yes it made them superstars around the world, but compared to The Swing and Listen Like Thieves? Pass,

2. Tears for Fears--The Seeds of Love. Other than Women in Chains, I did not like this album much. There is a line between Beetle-esque and ripping them off and I think Roland crossed it on this album

3. Wall of Voodoo--Seven Nights in Sammytown. IMHO not nearly as strong at Call of the West

I like "Seven Days In Sammystown." It's a bit unfair to judge this in comparison to "Call Of The West" because the band had replaced lead singer/songwriter Stan Ridgway (who had left) with Andy Prieboy, so the band was a totally different animal. It actually takes a few listens to get into this album, but it's rather good IMO.

[i]Seven and the Ragged Tiger[/i] was very good, perhaps not as good as [i]Rio[/i], but hey, what was?

[i]Notorious[/i] is definitely defferent (no Andy and Roger is going to affect any band's sound). But "Notorious", "American Science", "Meet El Presidente"...some good tunes there. "Skin Trade" isn't bad either.

Someone mentioned Cyndi Lauper's [i]A Night To Remember[/i]...that's not a bad album, either. In fact, every one of her albums is great,
except the new Jazz one ([i]At Last[/i]).

When Shoes put out "Tongue Twister," I was terribly disappointed with it because I thought "Present Tense." was fabulous. But the second one finally grew on me after many years.

After a fantastic first lp,I found (after months of searching)Phantom,Rocker and Slicks second lp Cover Girl complete butt blow.I agree with most of the opinions here on the lp,s I,ve heard,but I personaly liked give em enough rope.Lets not forget friends the Clash were once a rockabilly outfit The 101er,s.
