Biggest disappointment follow-up album

Absolutely!!...Cyndi is terribly underrated. A great writer, an incredible voice, and one of the best concerts I've ever seen. All of her albums are easy to listen to. I love that woman.

Thomas Dolby "The Flat Earth" was a big disappointment from the "Golden Age of Wireless"...

Don't get me started on this one........

I can think of at least 100 albums that came out within the same year as Rio that are a lot better than Rio.

Funny thing, this album seems to be as over-rated as the Beach Boys' "Pet Sounds" and the Beatles' "Sgt Pepper".

I don't fault anyone for liking it as much as they do, but I bought it when it first came out, listened to it a few times and filed it away. I don't think I even bothered to re-listen to it after it took off a few months later. I sold the LP years ago and have never had the desire to buy the CD version.

But then again, that's just me. I'll take the brilliance of Spandau Ballet's "True" album over "Rio" any day.....and that is NOT a joke...

Well, I'm not a huge Beatles or Beach Boys fan...so I'm with you on those.

But [i]Rio[/i] is a damn fine album. But I do agree it's a tad overrated. I like [i]Seven And The Ragged Tiger[/i] about as much, and my favorite Duran song is "I Don't Want Your Love" from [i]Big Thing[/i].

Ugh! You're killing me here! Does Spandau Ballet have even [i]one[/i] listenable tune? I mean really, what do you SB fans find to like about their lightweight, derivative meanderings?

Spaz, it's all subjective blah blah blah and I can't argue your personal preference of 'True', but if you haven't given 'Rio' another listen in all these years, you should. You're missing out on one of the best of the era.

Believe me, I've heard alot of great (AND crappy!) new wave over the years. I would be happy to find you a $1 copy of the lp. It's just NOT RIGHT not to have it at least sitting in your collection....it won't devalue the rest of your colletion, trust me.

Should there be zoning laws in a new wave record collection?? hmmm....

Early Spandau, while they were still cutting it up in the New Romantic scene in England, sounded totally different. It's really cool stuff: "To Cut a Long Story Short", "The Freeze", and "Chant No.1" were stompy dance numbers with muscle and no fluff. Later, when they came out with "True" etc., (although I liked these tunes, too), they had adopted a radically different sound, the blue-eyed crooning fancy-suit style. Mmmm.

Wait a minute. Mr "Union of the Snake, Space Age Love Song, Look of Love, and Never Ever Freakin' Ending Story in his top 50" is complaining about "lightweight"?! Just what "temple" are you worshipping at? All this MTV stuff comes during the mainstream and after the greatest new wave already hit.

Don't get me wrong, I love the stuff on your list, but it's a bit of the pot calling the kettle black. I strongly recommend giving early Spandau another try and even revisting True.

I didn't know that about Spandau. I'm one of those who never gave them a chance - don't have one song by them. I'll look for some of their early stuff on the Hub. Thanks for the tip, KYYX.

To Cut A Long Story Short is a GREAT song! I wasn't even aware of it until some djs played it at the Spoons concert in Vancouver I went to last summer.

Okay, I've only heard Spandau's later stuff...didn't care for it. Maybe the early stuff is good. I didn't like Berlin or Simple Minds, until I heard their early material.

But, I mean, you can't blame me...when Spandau Ballet is compared to Duran Duran, and all I've got to go on is True...I mean come on! But maybe they have some good early stuff. Is there a particular recording I should pick up?

By the way, Neverending Story is a good song! Limahl's got a great voice, whether solo or with his old band.

I'm sorry. My girlfriend at the time cheated on me with that bastard! The song sucked then, it sucks now, it will suck at the end of time. [V] Also, if put aside all of the popululist historical context of the True album. I bet you'll find a pretty well-crafted album. The single itself is expansive, blissful, and pretty epic.

Point well noted. I actually don't think any of the songs we both mentioned are truly "lightweight". I love them all. They have the perception of lightness though, compared to supposedly "more serious" music. The "True" album fits into the same such perception but is equally deserving of better regard IMHO.
