Liz Smith on Cherry Vanilla's New Book

Remember Cherry Vanilla? Not the ice cream. Cherry was a rock-chick extraordinaire — deejay, PR woman (for David Bowie back in the day and currently repping Greek composer Vangelis), ad exec, singer, groupie. She was quite the all-around 1960s/’70s artiste, even appearing in the Andy Warhol stage show, “Pork.” She was so not vanilla!

Miss Vanilla is penning her memoirs, a tale that begins — as so many do — when she was a demure 1950s Catholic schoolgirl. Fans got a taste of coming delights last Sunday when Cherry read juicy bits from her tome at the famous Book Soup on Sunset Boulevard.

I didn't write it; that was from Liz Smith's column yesterday;
Smith didn't focus so much on Vanilla as a musical entity




Cherry's back up band was The Police, without whom they might have never gotten off
the ground in the first place; look it up, and I suppose The Police are
not part of the 80s New wave scene;
If you own Pete Burns auto bio, he credits Vanilla as a huge influence on
himself, Boy George and Holly of FGTH,they all went to see her in Liverpool
at a venue called Eric's, as well as the Roxy...
If Vanilla is not part of this scene, then neither is Patti Smith
and Debbie Harry,who both came up in the ranks alongside Vanilla, and I've seen plenty here
about Patti and Debbie...

how misguided? Read Sting's book;
The Police were considered totally square during punk, they couldn't
get a booking at all. Miles Copeland, who managed The Police, brought
Vanilla(And Wayne County) to the UK to capitalize on their Warhol/Bowie
cachet,and it was non stop touring for half a year as Vanilla's band
that got them in front of people;
if you don't believe me, pick up a copy of Sting's book..
not to mention the fact that Sting and Stewart tried to seal Vanilla's
guitarist, Louie Lepore, to be guitarist for the Police(as revealed
in the new book by Andy Summers, who concedes that he was Sting and Stewart's
second choice, after Louie opted to stay with Vanilla..)

30 some gigs does not a career make. She also states that Stewart Copeland couldn't keep a beat....WTF? Ok Cherry. I think Toyah (not the lisping so called singer but the Toyah here) and Cherry are both misguided. But that's ok.....we all still love both of you.

30 some gigs DOES a career make if they're your first and only 30 gigs and you could only get them by
being paired up with someone else;
and both Sting in his book and Andy Summers in his book both
acknowledge that Stewart had a tendency to speed up in mid song, or 3/4
of the way through, so it's not something that Vanilla made up;
Sting constantly threatened to leave The police at the beginning because
of nothing happening, and if the punk gigs with Vanilla didn't happen, they
weren't going to suddenly get bookings based on their then 'nothing'
status simply because you think they would have;
Sting Would have left the band in all probability, meaning no Police!
