your opinion on the Surf Punks

I found the Surf Punks debut (w/ My Beach) in the $1 bin at the local used record store. This is one of those releases that I saw all the time back in the day and always passed it up - - the whole thing looked like a joke rather than anything listenable.

Well, since it was an unwrapped used record I was able to give it a cursory listen in the store. While it WAS kinda goofy it was also slightly better than I expected (I expected very little).

And yet I still didn't bring myself to buy it, but I've been thinking about the record since. It's almost like I still felt like it wasn't worth having - - the guys on the cover look like sammy hagar for god's sake!

Anyone like these guys? Anyone hate these guys? Is it worth picking up as a relic of the era, or is it best left behind?

My friends and I used to listen to that record a lot while partying, which in retrospect is probably kind of odd since we were a bunch of kids in Vermont, drinking and smoking on old logging roads rather than beaches. I pulled it out and played it a few months ago and enjoyed it, but for purely sentimental reasons. My guess is that since you've survived this long without it, you can probably make it the rest of the way.

I too have a fond place for the Surf Punks, that cassette was a staple during high school. It's a buck, give it a shot!

If you were a high school kid in SoCal back then, the Surf Punks absolutely plugged into a frenetic, bouncy, amped energy that was part of the music scene. It's easy to dismiss them as novelty now, but I say they were absolutely elemental to the, erm, surf and punk scene. You should absolutely have grabbed them. I think their appearance on Urgh! speaks to their relevancy...or maybe not since Toyah was on that too. [}:)]

as a skater in the early 80's this was a staple heard at many local ramps. I'm kinda with Motors on this one, it merely serves as a reference point in my timeline now but sure does bring back some great memories.

"Locals Only" was a great/fun album. "Watersports" and "I'm a Valley" were good tunes. I bought their other stuff and found it kinda forced, though...
