Top 15 New Wave Songs

I bookmarked this page a while ago and just forgot about it until now. Not too terrible as far as lists go and it's always fun to read other people's take on the time period. Take a looksie:

yeah. not a bad list, and mostly the kind of tracks I personally considered the epitome of new wave. I'd have chosen Missing Person's Destination Unknown. Also, since he mentioned them, there REALLY should be a song by A Flock of Seagulls--Space Age Love Song is basically a self-proclaimed new wave love song and would be perfect, probably to replace Politics of Dancing, which is not all that new wave to me. Blondie, I may have chosen Atomic, which is slightly disco, but also quite the synthy rock song. Human League--while overplaying to this day has stolen the thunder from Don't You Want Me, it is the right choice by them, although I also love The Lebanon and the fantastic New Wave take on Motown that is Mirror Man. Depeche--in terms of ground breaking new wave synthpop, I'd go with numerous songs from speak & spell (considering Vince was a HUGE influence on the new wave sound), or Leave in Silence. LOVE that he chose Car Trouble, which I consider to be Adam Ant's most new wave track. New Order--I wouldn't have gone with Perfect Kiss. Maybe the original mix of Temptation. Devo--I'd go with That's Good, which I personally think is their ultimate new wave song--and was also performed on Square Pegs!

Also missing is the much needed appearance by Berlin--The Metro, Masquerade, or mostly ANYTHING from Love Life, a perfect new wave album IMO. I'd seriously want an appearance by Midge era Ultravox as well. Actually, the list should be longer, because obviously there are MANY essential new wave songs that need to be on this list: Images of Heaven, Lawnchairs, Romanticide--I could go on and on...

I just thought it odd that Depeche should speak for Yaz and Erasure as well. But I suppose if there could only be one among the three to be represented - and I know this could very well ignite some vigorous debate - then I'm glad it was Depeche.

I could see your point by the way about choosing Temptation over the Perfect Kiss. I might have included a Cure track in there as well. They fit into the time period he specifies perfectly and have loads of material signature to the movement.

To me the fun of new wave meant it was "our music", meaning non-crossover. For example, I would have put "Are Friends Elecrtric" ratrher than "Cars" by Gary Numan...popular among new wave fans at the time but not overplayed ad nauseum on top 40 radio. I don't think it was elitism, just that to me 9 times out of 10 the songs that didn't crossover were better.

That's a crap list IMO. My list wouldn't include any of those songs and most of the artists either. Never thought of Adam and his Ants or Kim Wilde as New Wave.
