Why do you think hype has ANYTHING to do with REM's success? They are the example of success WITHOUT hype. Its about success by not selling out and by simply gaining new fans with each album and by touring constantly...

Why should I bother to do that? Is your opinion of a band based on the amount of hype it gets? Would your opinion of *insert your favorite obscure artist here* change if they were all of a sudden hyped-to-death?

I like Springsteen. Oh well. One of his best qualities is how he manages to sell tickets for his shows to completely cut away at the ticket scalpers[:)] Thumbs up for that.

I wouldn't call REM a load of hype. They bring it on themselves whenever Michael Stipe opens his mouth and says something inane in the press.

I have to agree with other posters. REM has been around a long time and they've worked their way to the top.

Not what one quote about what REM has actally given to the world of music outside ticket sales. Have they a readily identifiable individual sound? NO. Is there anything new in what they do? NO.
