Bad Best of Compilations and what YOU would use

Lets face it there are some bad Best of's out there and most always miss a few essential tracks and often don't fill the 80 minutes of the disc. What are the worst offenders and what would you use trackwise for your essential Best Of instead?


The original Human League Best of (only 12 tracks) was rather thin on the early years but isnt terrible...

I'd still add:
Empire State Human
The Things That Dreams Are Made Of
Seconds
Together In Electric Dreams
and switch out the original version of Being Boiled with the Fast Version.

Glittering Prize: Simple Minds 81/92 is rather crap as it has mainly later period with no early synth work on it. Very revisionist.

I'd keep:
Alive and Kicking
Don't You (Forget About Me)
Promised You a Miracle
Sanctify Yourself
Up on the Catwalk
All the Things She Said
Waterfront

I'm partially guessing as what to add as I'm still rather new to the early years but I'm guessing on:

Glittering Prize
Someone Somewhere In Summertime

Bad Best of Remix albums are the Greatest Mixes: The Best of The Thompson Twins (some really bad versions here and yet I heard they were even shortened from the original lengths) and Billy Idol - Vital Idol (missing Rebel Yell, Eyes Without a Face) and it has a really horrible second part of White Wedding (part II) that frankly sounds horrible with vocval snippets thrown in at akward places.

What I hate about some Best of compilations is the fact that they stick with the single versions of the songs. Like Peter Murphy's Best of has the short version of "Indigo Eyes." And the Visage Best Of has the short version of "Damned Don't Cry."

The only Best Of compilation that I think covered everything was "The Collection" by Ultravox. It didn't leave a single hit out, from "Vienna" to the then current album. Which is always the problem with best of's, you look at the song selection and alwa

Some compilations feature "new versions" of the hits an artist had when said artist was on another label. That way they don't have to oay for the rights to those other songs. Problem is, most of these "new versions" really suck.

I guess I should add an example to the list for the sake of the original thread! It drives me nuts that the album version of "When Smokey Sings" by ABC is always used on their greatest hits albums and various compilations as opposed to the single mix. I t

I've never really bought Best Ofs comps b/c there's always a weird feeling about listening to these artists' songs in jumbled order. I can't help but think of the original track lists, and how that was the order in which the artists had intended for you t
