SHARE: Private Lives - The Memory Of Your Name (1982)

I have just recently discovered this band and it seems that their debut / only studio album from 1984 - Prejudice & Pride - has been named as one of their favourites by many fans of obscure 80s releases / gems.

I, on the other hand, havent been so impressed by the singles from that release or the album itself.

However, the single released two years prior to that is a completely different story.

Apparently, the main man behind Private Lives - John Adams, has recorded the album as a duo with Morris Michael, but previously he has been part of the trio with two other musicians and together they have recorded / released this amazing peace of synth-pop magic.

But the main ingredient here seems to be the producer - none other than Tony Visconti.

After hearing this single just a couple of days ago, it has quickly become one of my favourites of this early 80s era.

This band has indeed produced very good and memorable songs, but I think none of the others comes even close to "The Memory Of Your Name" from 1982.

I 2nd that! I think that album is wonderful!! My favourite has to be "Break The Whole Thing Down" - LOVE that track!!

I agree with Xymox. I've always found their album a bit of a letdown, but Memory Of Your Name is a perfect song. I wish they had more stuff like this.

I guess its really a matter of preference.

As soon as I heard the intro to "The Memory Of Your Name" I knew straight away its my kind of song.
Its just that irresistible synth hook at the very beginning that does it for me.
Strangely enough, it does remind me a lot of the beginning of "You Disappear from View" - just the way it sounds.

One of my favourite pieces of 80s music is Imagination by Xymox.
Those few notes played on the "melodica" sound so haunting in that song.... it gets me every time - no matter how many times i`ve heard it.....

And another example.....the beginning of "Idle Threats" (extended) by National Pastime - that is the quintessential 80s sound for me.....

Thanks for sharing this xymox970, it's very kind of you.

I would love to see a CD re-release of their album complete with singles and b-sides. Cherry Red would be the most likely candidate for this. My favourite track from it is 'Break The Chains'

As a Big John Adams fan I mentioned the Pride & Prejudice album to Cherry Red and was told it would be "marginal in terms of sales". Not sure I agree with that, can't be more marginal than a Sal Solo album surely?

Anyways if you are new to the band I have a lot of stuff posted on my blog and will be putting up more. I have the debut PL single Where Do I Go from 1980, Memory of Your Name and Because You're Young, the LP and all the related singles, plus John Adams' solo singles - Through the Eyes of Love from 1985, Strip This Heart from 1987 and the solo LP "Strong". There are quite a few rare B-Sides in that set.

The only thing I don't have is the Rentboyz single which was the first thing he was on apparently.

I was reading an article today in an old Noise! Magazine from 1982, where Betty Page brags about going to Good Earth studios (in August '82) to hear playback of the full completed Private Lives album produced by Tony Visconti. She described the album as "distinctive as hoped" and Visconti reckoned it's the best thing he's produced since 'Heroes.' Maddening that this wasn't released as a full album that captured Private Lives in their 1982 glory sounds incredible. Anyone got any leads on this one?
