I personally love new wave remixes. My criteria for a great one would be that the best only slightly alter the original, don't elongate the song too far, and of course make it easier to mix in and out of then the original. Pretty simple isn't it.
I'm not a big fan of the re-rub where they try to take an 80's song and try to take it in a house/techno direction or when they elongate a song unnecessarily by just throwing in crap samples (vocal stutters for example) and repeating ad naseum.
My favorite remixes of all-time:
Gary Numan - Cars (the dj remix) which took The Premier Hits "version" and extended it out to 6 minutes and with a building 2 1/2 minute intro and so much more energy.
Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (12" Mix). As soon as the breaking glass sound comes in you are treated to a huge building intro and simply tons of energy. I've heard many other good remixes as well but the original 12" is still my favorite.
Erasure- Oh L'amour (Funky Sisters 12") Its not the single version that's real memorable to me its the elongated club version.
New Order- B.L.T. & True Faith (12 "remixes). While Blue Monday never got tampered with by having an edited single I'm not a fan of B.L.T. single edit at all and the original 12" is perfection in my eyes. The 12" True Faith remix which came out after the Substance version with the slightly longer intro is my favorite ('94 version?). The razormaid and future mixes of these songs (and Blue Monday) are great as well for further changing up a few loops but they still aren't as good as the official ones.
Yaz - Situation and Don't Go (12" Mixes). Single edits just end so quickly and the full version of these songs just extend the bliss out so much longer. Nuff said really.
Yaz - State Farm remix (off the Situation cd single). "Get down...GO"! Great (yet pretty short) mix.
Visage - Fade to Grey 12". I have no idea why the cd version of the Best of Visage has the Basshead remix as the elongated intro and outro of the original 12" (on my Best of vinyl version) is so fantastic.
Pet Shop Boys (Sasha mix). Really interesting to see Sasha keep the mood and feel of the original yet give it a small update. Top notch.
Soft Cell - Tainted Love/ Where Did Our Love Go. Better then the single version. What's left to say. Was hard as hell to find pre- Napster on cd.
Echo & The Bunnymen - Lips like Sugar 12" Mix. Hey I know its corny to like such a revamped version but its a breeze mixing with this version. Bring on Dancing Horses 12" version is tops too.
Depeche Mode- Strange Love (Blind & Pain Mix). Part of the beauty of this song to me was the great remixes. I so rarely heard the original.
Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough (Schizo Mix). SO much better then the weak sounding single mix. Great intro, bridge, and exit.
Depeche Mode - A Question of Time (Extended). The original is too short. This elongated building intro hits the jackpot.
Duran Duran - Girls on Film 12" Night Version Mix. Another song where I rarely heard the original. Plus the video version even has the 12" mix. Planet Earth (night version) is almost as good.
A Flock of Seagulls - Wishing (I Had a Photograph) Elongated version. Fade outs suck especially on this great song. The elongated version winds slowly down. Perfection.
King - Love & Pride 12" Mix. At my club they always played the video with the 12" version with huge congo intro. Thanks to Richard Blade i know enjoy the same memories at home.
Cure- A Forest & The Walk (mixed up versions). I know its heresey to say I hate massively updated versions of songs and then pick these two. I think both are top notch and hard to ignore.
Cure - Inbetween Days (dj remix). Elongated intro means easy mix in. Yes a classic can be effectively remixed. Never seen that done with Just Like Heaven yet though. [}:)]
Book of Love - Boy & I Touch Roses 12" versions. Simply elongating the love. Also put your cd player on continuous when you play Pretty Boys & Girls and make sure to keep the Tubular Bells intro thanks to the long album intro.
INXS - New Sensation 12". Sure they add too many corny samples to this one but its killer on a dance floor. Vocal intro ("let there be love!!"), scratching, and banjos. We're not is Kansas anymore.
Alphaville - Forever Young (Special Extended Mix). On a best of (with 4 singles and 4 remixes, lol) it adds dance beats so you don't have to slow dance to it. Fantastic.
A-Ha - Sun Always Shines on TV 12" Mix. Not sure if this is the official 12" one as I just downloaded it but this is a great extended intro with a more danceable conga drum beat added to it. Just stunning really.
CCCP - American / Soviets (all remixes). Hell I think I've only heard the original a few times. Paul Cameron and instrumental remixes are both good and I heard a different vocal version on radio that I've never attained either.
Information Society - Club Mix. Maybe this goes on to long but this breakdancing style 12" I've got on vinyl with an extended outro is top notch in my book.
Sly Foxx - Lets Go All The Way 12" Mix. Shum Shum Zagay. You know what I mean.
Kon Kan - I Beg Your Pardon 12" version. The single version visits you, drinks your beer, and leaves. The 12" version spends the night. [:X]
Peter Murphy - Final Solution 12" "Fa-fa-fa-fa-final solution!!" then the heavy beats hit ya.
Psychedelic Furs - Pretty in Pink Berlin Mix. Vocal intro that builds really is nice. Just picked it up and love it to bits.
Nitzer Ebb - Join in the Chant 12" Mix. "Ohhhhh Uhhhh" It's the 12" that really sets the place on fire.
Human League - Don't You Want Me (dj? remix?). Got it from cdr from dj. Elongates the intro and outro for easy mixing and stutters the vocals on the way out. The one I sleep with on Friday nights. [;)]
Men W/O Hats- Safety Dance 12" Mix. "SSSSS-AAAAA-FFFFF-EEEEEE-TTTTT-YYY-SAFETY DANCE -DOOO DOO DEE DOO DOO DOO DEEDEEDOO"
Culture Club - Time (Extended Version). One of the best CC songs gets the elongated disco strings intro and outro. Wow.
Modern english - Melt With You (12" updated version). This was a 12" version of re-release with the vocal intro that takes off quickly. If your forced to play this song then use this version.
Kraftwerk - Tour De France (French Version). Heavy breathing break-dancing version for me.
Oingo Boingo - Dead Man's Party (elongated version of a Best of compilation). Slow starting vocal intro kicks in for extended fun. Boo yah.
The Edge - Hot Tracks Level 1+2 cd's. These 2 dj only cd's are the pride of my collection back when it was cool to pay for cd's. The essential remixed versions of Love My Way, I Ran, Lies, Politics of Dancing, I Want Candy, Cities in the Dust, Words, Rock the Casbah, Talk Talk, and The Metro all breathe new life and easy mixing to the old originals. Some of these may not differ too much from the original 12" versions out there but getting them all in one package sure made it nice and easy.
Too many good razormaid & ultimix versions out there but I wanted to only show the ones BETTER then the originals in my book (or close to it).
