As for discounting non-writing band members, such as those mentioned in Be Bop Deluxe, the real criteria would be if the song writer made the same kind of music without them.
In this instance, I would say that Bill Nelson never made Be Bop Deluxe style music ever after.

Now Billy Corgan has managed to sound very Smashing Pumpkins even still.
