Ahh you've got Eclectic Disease. Its what happens when you ignore and deter away from the great stuff that's rather mainstream and groundbreaking in favor of bands that know one but .0001% of the population has heard of. I hear there's medication for it but its an ongoing ailment that many people on this board also suffer from. With treatment there's help.

So some of you don't dig DM, The Smiths, The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, Soft Cell, to name a few... all stalwarts of New Wave! Oh boy! If it's a joke, it's not even funny![:0]
A new waver digs all new wave bands, he must have them in his collection as a matter of principle. Meanwhile, U may like some bands more than others. In my case, I like less Kraftwerk (regardless of what their contribution to the development of synth based music has been)and probably some commercial bands like Human League, REM etc

Cars
China Crisis

Sorry, never could get into the former...and being exposed to the latter from following this site, have to say I don't get the appeal.

Talking Heads
Ramones
Bowie

All overrated heat seeking turds.

I used to loathe U2 with a flaming passion but I really like their latest coolection a lot for some reason.

Kate Bush got a mention in here. I like her a lot & have most of her CDs - it's her fans that get up my nose. The hype around Ariel was maddening.

I absolutely don't dig the horrible Smiths/Morrisey (I get phisically ill listening to his wining and winging), REM sucks big time too. And most of the mainstram attempts to try to gain crowds.

Happily there are loads of good bands and initiatives who deserve to be called New Wave and not being conservative musicians, who make boring rock and tried/try something new and worthwhile. No offence, everybody has their on and offs.

Oh...I'm new here, and from the Netherlands.
I was reading your forum for a couple of days. Very nice.(although in Europe there is quite a different approach on what New Wave really is..., but that is probably known here aswell). So I twist some mainland individualism in here. [8D]

(don't know how to edit on this computer, as my right side is out of screen. [B)] )

I dislike all that Erasure stuff and the Communards aswell. But that is imo synthpop.

The Smiths (too self-indulgent, some songs are good but most I don't get)

U2 (just don't get them like the rest of the world, don't know why)

Talking Heads (music doesn't hit me hard inside, their songs don't have a full sound, too light and fluffy and Byrne's voice is annoying)

Some that come immediately to mind:

Thompson Twins
Eurythmics
Echo and the Bunnymen
REM

As far as being eclectic goes, I have to admit that most of the New Wave "mega hits" make me cringe these days. There's a certain frustration that goes along with hearing "Don't you forget about me" for the 1,000th time when Simple Minds has an entire catalog of great songs that 95% of the radio listeners in the world don't even know exist.

I also have a big chip on my shoulder about the entire genre being treated like one big joke. Yeah, there were some cheesy songs. EVERY genre of music has it's share of cheesy songs. The difference is that New Wave has been defined by them, and that's all people think of when you say you're into New Wave and 80s music in general.

"Ooooh, I like New Wave too! Do you have "Saftey Dance"?!?"

Arrghhhhh!!!!!!!!!!

For me, it was the Sugarcubes and the Cocteau Twins. I didn't like Bronski Beat at all, either. Especially the Sugarcubes. Bjork just pisses me off when I hear her warble nonsensically.
