Worst years for music

I was a bit tempted to go with 1972 to 1977 as well, soley for all of that horrific dinosaur 1970's rock like the Allman Brothers and the awful pop of Bobby Sherman and such. But had to reconsider because of T. Rex, Bowie, New York Dolls etc.

I just couldn't stand the whole "grunge" and "alternative" scenes of the mid-ninties and the pre-fab tween pop-stars.

Hey this'll make you feel old: I got a request tonight on my show for "some old stuff from back when I was in high school". I figured it was gonna be Blondie or The Cars or something and the caller said "How about Sum 41 with Fat Lip"?"......I looked the song up. It came out in 2001. 2001?...Old stuff??? Welcome to middle age.

Kinda like when I realised that all the girls in Playboy these days were born after 1985.

Today's music is a disposable, testosterone-based, beat-driven, commercial, manufactured insta-hits type sound, with only angst or sexual lust to offer...No longer are there catchy melodies or hoaky, fun-lovin, lyrics.....You have to dig deeper and deeper these days to find any real music.

Look harder and be passionate about it like in your yute...er, youth. I'll gladly sit with the 1995-2003 crowd as we laugh our asses off at you folks being drivin completely bonkers after about 5 early doowop/motown songs. Don't get me wrong, I love that stuff in doses, but it'd drive me nuts after awhile.

And those votes for the late 60s?! WT-humungous-F?!!!! Yeah, the music that drove the major cultural revolution of our time sucked....SHEYEAH, THAT'S IT! Get off your crack pipes people!!!

But that time period was not just Doo Wop[B)] There's Jazz, Blues, Rockabilly and Rock, Country (yes, there was a time when Country was actually GOOD - and it was back then[8D] ), Space Age Pop and Exotica, Teeny Bopper Pop (great music there too), and even Avant Garde stuff! The 90s could not produce anything like it.

I'm surprised many of you have chosen the 60s. Music of that period --remember THE BEATLES, THE STONES, THE WHO, THE KINKS, THE ANIMALS, and others that I don't have time or space to mention -- had an incredible influence on 80s music.

I loved the 90's (Radiohead and Smashing Pumkins!!!) plus a great deal of great indie and britpop bands.

Maybe some of you would prefer to listen to the sample songs in a $150 Casio keyboard...

I love the 90's too. ESPECIALLY all the BritPop (Gene, anyone?).

I think a lot of the people who dis the 90's are simply unaware of what went on beyond the top 40 or what MTV shoved down our throats. Same for the ones who trash today's music. There's probably tons of stuff they'd like but they only know what's popular. They'd be pleased to know that the NW sound just continued throughout the 90's (under the radar) and has made a MAJOR resurgence in 2004.

There's no way I could've voted for 1955 through 1971 really. It was like the quantum leap in Rock with so many styles and genres it's dizzying. From Elvis hiccuping through a radical "Blue Moon Of Kentucky" to David Bowie's forward thinking "The Man Who Sold The World" album? That's what ya call exciting.

...yes, Yes, YEs, YES, [b]YES!!![/b] I'm gonna go WAY out on a limb and say that Radiohead and the Punkins are as good for me as just about any new wave band. I'm not saying the 90s were as good as the 80s...they weren't. But the favorites in the 90s are just as indispensable, perhaps not quite as cherished.

I appreciate that the 60's are a huge influence, I'm glad all those groups and singers were there to set a foundation - I understand it was a huge cultural revolution, that there was an astronomical amount of talent - but it still doesn't mean I want to listen to their music. It's so subjective though - obviously I think there was great music from that period & like some of it, but if I had to choose a decade then the '60's got my vote. I find more music from the other decades that appeals to me.[;)]
